Windows tends to fill your screen, memory and start bar with all sorts of unused and unnecessary items. Having too many things open can drastically slow your computer, so you should check to see just what is being loaded on startup.

In Windows XP, you can right-click on the start button. Choose Properties, and the Task Bar and Start Properties box appears. I recommend checking the Classic Start Menu option. Select Customize if you prefer to choose which programs will automatically launch at startup.
