Sullivan Branding taps executive creative director

Sullivan Branding has named Earl Keister executive creative director for the agency’s Nashville and Memphis offices.

Keister, who will be based in Nashville, has served as creative director of Sullivan Branding’s Memphis office since September 2010.

Prior to joining Sullivan Branding, Keister served as creative director at Creative Energy in Johnson City, Tenn., and at WestWayne/22squared in Atlanta. Keister has also served as art director for The Tombras Group in Knoxville  and FCB/New York in New York.

Keister earned his BFA in graphic design from the University of Tennessee.

“[Keister] is a very talented creative leader who has twenty years of experience with such national brands as, AT&T, Nabisco, Fila, Toyota, Russell Athletic, SunTrust, Citibank, Texas Pete, Kraft and Verizon,” Evette White, Sullivan partner and CEO, said in a release. “Earl’s leadership further strengthens the services we provide our clients every day.”

GBA adds project manager

Health care technology consulting firm GBA has hired as vice president an executive from a New York architecture and engineering firm with a global footprint.

Kelly Spivey comes to Franklin-based GBA — which was founded as Gene Burton & Associates — from Shen Milsom & Wilke, where she had been senior associate and manager of the New York office. Spivey has 23 years of health care consulting and project management experience and spent four years at the Shen firm. Before that, she worked for six years at FKP Architects in Dallas.

“Kelly brings a depth of experience in healthcare technology consulting to GBA and the unique perspective of both project owner and consultant,” said GBA President and CEO Suzan Logan. “Her addition to our management team reflects GBA’s continued growth and leadership in this industry segment.”

Spivey earned her bachelor’s degree in interior design from Mississippi College and is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects.

GBA was founded in 1988 and now is home to about 40 people.

Ex-O’Charley’s HR officer heads to Massachusetts

Bob Luz, the former chief human resources officer at O'Charley's and its new parent company American Blue Ribbon Holdings, has been named president and CEO of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association.

Luz, who came to O'Charley's a decade ago when the company bought the Ninety Nine chain of eateries, had been commuting to Nashville from Boston. His job at American Blue Ribbon was taken over this spring by former Red Robin executive Bill Streitberger.

Deane, Smith & Partners welcomes Catterton

Nashville-based public relations, marketing, design and technology firm Deane, Smith & Partners has added David Catterton as manager of creative services.

Prior to joining the company full-time, Catterton served as a design intern at Deane Smith while finishing a degree in advertising at the University of Tennessee.

“We are excited to welcome David on board as a full-time member of our team,” said Silas Deane, partner and CEO of Deane Smith. “We are looking forward to seeing his unique skills and vision in design, web and advertising come to life with our clients.”

Catterton will oversee all design-related projects for the firm, including advertisements, websites and marketing collateral.

Catterton holds a bachelor’s degree in advertising with a minor in business administration from the University of Tennessee.

Frost Brown Todd adds East

Frost Brown Todd has announced that Van East has joined the firm as member serving his clients in matters involving commercial real estate and business transactions, as well as matters involving corporations, limited liability companies and other closely held business entities.

Prior to joining the firm, East practiced law with the Nashville law firm of White & Reasor, where he started his legal career as an associate in 1987 and later became a member.

“We are excited Van has joined Frost Brown Todd. His experience in the areas of real estate and corporate business will be crucial to building the firm’s Nashville presence and expanding our capabilities,” says Mekesha Montgomery, member-in-charge of Frost Brown Todd’s Nashville office.

East is a former Chairman of the Business Law Section of the Tennessee Bar Association and a current member of its Executive Council. Through his work with the TBA, he participated in drafting the Tennessee Revised Limited Liability Company Act, as well as other legislation involving Tennessee’s business entity statutes. In addition, East served on the joint committee of the Real Estate and Business Law Sections that prepared the TBA Report on Third Party Closing Opinions.

Bridgestone Americas adds Crum

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations said it has hired Jiffy Lube International President Stu Crum to be president of Bridgestone Retail Operations.

Crum, who has led the 2,100-unit Jiffy Lube chain since 2011, will start his new job Aug. 5. He has nearly three decades of experience in automotive retail and has held a number of jobs across the Americas within the broader Shell organization. Crum joined Shell about a decade ago from Texaco, where he worked for 15 years in several marketing and retail roles.

“I am confident that Stu’s experience in training and developing people, his drive for operational excellence and his keen understanding of consumers will ensure that we continue to provide the best service, the highest quality products and the right solutions to meet the needs of all of our customers,” says Gordon Knapp, president of Bridgestone’s U.S. and Canadian consumer businesses.

Crum earned a marketing degree from the University of Tulsa and spent three years as a placekicker in the NFL and USFL in the mid-1980s before joining Texaco.

TSU official addresses U.S. military veterans health care issues

Tennessee State University Media Relations Director Rick DelaHaya participated in a recently held local seminar that focused on mental health issues facing military veterans. 

The seminar, which brought together hundreds of mental health professionals at the Nashville Public Library, focused on the danger of depression, which experts say if ignored, can lead to unemployment, homelessness and detention. It was organized by Warrior Centric Healthcare Training, and sponsored by the American Psychiatric Association, and The Steptoe Group, an Ellicott City, Md., organization that ensures improved access and delivery of quality health, science and education services for veterans.

“Whether it is the scars of battle or just leaving a lifestyle you have known for the better part of your life, adjusting to civilian life can have major drawbacks,” DelaHaya, a retired Air Force master sergeant, said in a release. “Some come with depression and disorders that make it difficult to adjust.”

Walmart Foundation to provide $30K grant to YMCA of Middle Tennessee

The Walmart Foundation will provide a $30,000 State Giving Program grant to the YMCA of Middle Tennessee to help support the Y’s SMARTkids program.

The grant will help provide positive academic, social and emotional learning support to participating middle and high school students.

“The SMARTkids program is committed to helping young people in our community reach their full potential in all aspects of life,” Lonnell Matthews, district executive director of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, said in a release. “We appreciate Walmart’s support of this important effort to help young people in our communities grow and succeed.”
