Another at-large Metro Council contender unveils television ad

Joelton business owner Ken Jakes, campaigning largely as a pro-fairgrounds, government-skeptic candidate, is the latest Metro Council at-large contender to go on television.

Jakes told The City Paper Tuesday he’s paid for three different television advertisements, totaling “833 spots.” They began airing earlier this week. He said he couldn’t recall the exact number of dollars he paid for the television time.

“In one of them, I talk about bringing business sense and common sense back to the council,” Jakes said. “That’s something that’s been missing. And then I also talk about the fairgrounds.”

Jakes, who lost as a district candidate four years ago, said in the commercial he urges citizens to vote for ratification of a proposed Metro Charter amendment that would keep the status quo at the 117-acre fairgrounds property.

“The language on this ballot is confusing for some people,” he said.

Jakes is one of several candidates looking to break into a field of five incumbent at-large members who are all seeking re-election: Megan Barry, Tim Garrett, Jerry Maynard, Ronnie Steine and Charlie Tygard.

Barry, Garrett, Steine and attorney Renard Francois have also unveiled television commercials.

JOELTON? Really? That's practically NOT in the Davidson County by most folks' standards. LOL No wonder he's for the fairgrounds. Let's hear from business owners in the immediate vicinity of that ruckus, and then see who of that group wants that clamor on their Saturdays. The poll home owners that currently OCCUPY that same area. :-)

girliegirl - I think a poll of the local business and home owners that occupy the space around the fairgrounds, but only those that were there before the fairgrounds were there. I believe that is fair grounds for a poll!

Language of things like Amendment is only confusing to clueless people who should not be voting if they cannot decipher the language. This is why such measures taken to the people are a BAD IDEA. This is why we're a republic and not a direct democracy. This stupid referendum takes away the much-needed buffer between Joe Sixpack and Joe Lawmaker.

Yes, Joelton is still in Davidson County. The Fairgrounds belongs to everyone, not just a handful of activist. I think Kenny Jakes will be a breath of fresh air in the Metro Council. We do need people who are capable of using common sense. We have a complete lack of understanding in our current Council line-up. August 4th will be a much needed turning point.
