Council approves Eakin-Cavert overlay

After more than 30 minutes of discussion, the Metro Council voted 30-3 on third reading last night to approve a historic landmark overlay for the Eakin-Cavert schools complex in the Hillsboro-West End Neighborhood.

Collectively known as Eakin Elementary, the two buildings will now have a degree of protection if the Metro Board of Education decides to raze one or both buildings to make way for a new building. Specifically, the Council and the Metro Historic Commission would have a say in such a decision.

District 18 Councilwoman Ginger Hausser sponsored the bill, which originally created some concern among some council members, according to West Meade Councilman Bob Bogen.

During discussion of the ordinance, on which Hausser had deferred a vote at the last council meeting, Bogen and Bordeaux Councilman Melvin Black both stressed that there should be no rush to enact the bill.
