The man police believe murdered a 20-year-old last weekend in the James Cayce public housing development is in jail after his Thursday-night arrest in Murfreesboro.
Metro police, with help from Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office personnel, arrested Charzelle Swafford, 21, at a Courtland Street home in Murfreesboro.
Police said it was a Crime Stoppers tip that led to Swafford’s arrest. Police sought Swafford after the shooting death of Dejuantae Moore Saturday afternoon at a 604 Sylvan St. apartment.
According to police, Swafford and Moore got into an argument Friday night. Afterward, Swafford allegedly knocked on the apartment’s back door shortly after noon on Saturday and opened fire on Moore when he opened the door.
Swafford then allegedly shot 15-year-old Taurus Williams before running upstairs and trying to shoot three other teens in the apartment. The gun, however, failed to fire.
Moore died at the scene. Williams is still listed in stable condition at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
Police charged Swafford with four counts of attempted murder aside from the criminal homicide charge. He is in jail on $600,000 bond.
