Metro Councilman Duane Dominy has formally announced his Republican primary campaign for Democratic state Rep. Sherry Jones’ House District 59 seat.
“For a number of years, residents have asked me to run because I’ve been involved in the community. They’re not pleased with the representation they’ve had,” Dominy said of Jones, who has held the seat since 1995.
Dominy appointed a treasurer for his campaign back in July. Elected in 2007, Dominy represents the Metro Council’s 28th District, which includes large swaths of Antioch.
Dominy formally announced his candidacy at a breakfast for retired Metro employees over the weekend at the state fairgrounds. Over the past year, Dominy has been an outspoken critic of the mayor’s plans to shut down and redevelop the site, and even launched an online petition to “keep the fairground(s) intact.”
Asked about challenging a longtime incumbent in a general election, Dominy jabbed, “She’s represented the Democratic Caucus of that district really well.”
The primary will be held Aug. 5, 2010, and the general election is slated for Nov. 2 of next year.
