Downtown bank robbed

Metro police hope the public can help them identify the man who allegedly robbed SunTrust Bank’s 401 Commerce St. branch Monday afternoon.

The suspect approached the teller at 12:20 p.m. and demanded money, police said. The teller complied, and the suspect fled on foot.

Police describe the suspect as a black man in his late 30s who is approximately 5 feet, 8 inches tall with a medium build. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a black jacket, black knit cap and faded jeans.

The SunTrust robbery is one of the first of the new year. Police saw a rash of bank robberies in the weeks that followed Thanksgiving — a half-dozen in a three-week period — but that activity tapered off toward year-end.

Anyone who has information concerning the robbery is urged to contact Detective Keith Sutherland with the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force at 232-7500 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.

do you know why there are more banks and quick check markets robbed in the big cities than in the smaller towns . well in the big cities the people fear the criminals but in the country as in small towns the criminals still fear the people . we are armed with and without permits lol . you see in the county the criminal may not live long enough for the police to get there to save them :) plus when gangs try to set up a home base they get ran out or town or just vanish
