Rush hour traffic in downtown Nashville will likely be affected by a 36-inch water main break at the intersection of Second Avenue South and Peabody Street Tuesday evening.

Traffic on Second Avenue South was reduced to one lane northbound between Middleton Street and Korean Veterans Boulevard as of 3:30 p.m. Peabody was also reduced to one lane between First Avenue South and Second Ave South — and completely closed between Second and Third Avenue South.

Police officers were on the scene to assist in directing motorists, but officials are asking commuters to avoid the area, if possible.

According to Metro Water Services, the repair on the water main is expected to continue into the evening hours. The extent of the damage, however, is not yet know.

An uncertain number of customers in the area may experience low water pressure or outages.
