East Literature sixth-grader wins city spelling bee

Taking a deep breath, concentrating precisely on each letter, each contestant anxiously waits to hear if his or her spelling of a word is correct.

Silence means the spelling was accepted; a ding means that it was not.

Students from 42 elementary and middle schools gathered at Meharry Medical College yesterday for the citywide Dr. Kathryn C. Mitchell Spelling Bee.

Alex French, a sixth-grader at East Literature Magnet, took first place, receiving a $500 award. Fellow schoolmate Lyndsey Moulds, a fifth-grader, placed third. Ira Kaplan, a sixth-grader from Walter Stokes Middle School, placed second, receiving a $250 award.
