Two lanes of Eighth Avenue South are set to close for the next 11 months as a result of construction on downtown’s Korean Veterans Boulevard extension.

The two lanes, set to close Tuesday, Jan. 3, are at Eighth Avenue and Lafayette Street, according to the Metro Public Works department.

Closures are aimed at accommodating the construction of the extension, the new south border of Music City Center. These particular road closures are where a new Eighth Avenue roundabout is planned.

Both northbound and southbound traffic on Eighth Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction approaching the Lafayette Street intersection. In addition, northbound Lafayette Street will be reduced to one lane just south of the Eighth Avenue intersection.

Due to the duration of the lane closures, motorists are advised to use an alternate route into and out of downtown and Lower Broadway. The $10.7 million KVB extension should be completed by the end of 2012.

The KVB extension will be a new four-lane, median divided roadway providing a connection between Fourth Avenue South and Eighth Avenue South.
