Third Man Records (Michael W. Bunch)

Opened in 2009 by White Stripe, Raconteur, Dead Weather member, producer and solo recording artist Jack White along with his cohorts Ben Blackwell and Ben Swank — the second and third men, thus the label’s name — this space on Seventh Avenue south of Broadway serves as a live performance venue, record shop and production headquarters for White’s Third Man Records. Though Third Man isn’t a proper recording studio, the TMR staff commits every live performance in the building’s Blue Room to analog tape, frequently releasing the audio on limited-edition vinyl. With multi-format releases, sleek, multihued decor and exotic taxidermy, the storefront embodies the sort of DIY ethos that launched the garage-rock-revival boom of the 2000s and made White an international icon, complete with Willy Wonka-esque mystique.
