A fatal wrong-way crash shut down Interstate 40 near downtown Nashville early on Friday morning.

According to a Metro Nashville Police Department statement, Kenneth Faulkenberry, 34, of South Carolina was driving a Jeep the wrong way on eastbound I-40 near downtown when he crashed head-on into a Hyundai Accent.

The driver of the Hyundai, Christopher Silvio, 24, of Louisiana, died at the scene of the accident. His girlfriend, Danielle Bledsoe, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with critical injuries. Faulkenberry and his passenger, Robert Faulkenberry, were also critically injured in the crash.

According to Metro police, the Jeep was apparently driving without headlights on. There was no evidence to indicate impairment on the part of either driver. The Davidson County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case to decide whether charges will be filed.
