Crews worked more than five hours Tuesday night to douse a massive house fire on Linden Avenue near Belmont University. Three fire stations were called to fight the blaze that left heavy, gray smoke hanging over several blocks.
No one was injured in the fire, but there were people still in the house when crews arrived. The fire was reported about 5:30 p.m.
The fire was contained to the third and fourth stories of the 10,000-square-foot, turn-of-the-century home owned by Mary Jenkins Hardin and Brett Sheriff. Tax documents show they paid $1.3 million for the house in 2006. In 2009, it was appraised at $1.07 million.
Neighbors said the house was built in 1899 to look like a riverboat.
In covering a story about a home catching fire, I find it intriguing how they chose to mention that the house has decreased in value by $230K over the course of the last 3 years.
