A Chapel Hill man is facing aggravated assault charges after a fender bender turned violent Tuesday afternoon in Franklin.

Dennis Coble, 60, allegedly got out of his vehicle and began cursing another motorist after the drivers’ vehicles collided in heavy traffic near the intersection of Mallory Lane and Liberty Pike.

That’s when the other driver told police things began to escalate — to the point Coble took out a pocketknife and opened the blade.

Neither the other driver, nor his 12-year-old daughter who was in the car with him, were hurt.

Coble was charged with aggravated assault and released on $2,500 bond.

People are so isolated in their cars, houses, on cell phones/ computers etc. that they get angry at anyone who gets in their space. What is this world coming to?

Story so short on facts to make much of any comment.
Who was at fault and the behavior of other driver than
defendant before and after the accident would be helpful.

He's lucky he pulled that knife on a bedwetter instead of a carry permit holder. He'd likely be in the morgue now instead of back at home.

"He's lucky he pulled that knife on a bedwetter instead of a carry permit holder. He'd likely be in the morgue now instead of back at home."

It's always a question of where to begin with you, Hexy. I suppose your tormented mind finds a little comfort in separating the world into ropin', wranglin', shoot-em-up hotshots and "bedwetters."

I suppose that, had you been on the scene, whipping out your loaded stiffy would have given a stern warning to not only the father, but his innocent 12-year old daughter sitting by in terror.

Hexy, when you see carrying your gun as a sound - if very, very sad - choice of a rational (?) human being defending his/her life or property, you might get a soupcon of tolerance from me. If you had no life or property to defend and you'd hesitate not one moment to pull out your sidearm to teach a man and his 12-year old girl a lesson they'll never, ever forget, you are a pervert and a bully.

um may not, i am going to have to disagree with you. if someone where to pull a knife on me and i had one of my children with me, you're out of your mind to think i wouldn't at least show them what i'm packing so they back off. granted, the accident was in franklin and i highly doubt that anyone would have done anything, BUT what do you think would have happened if it would have happened in downtown nashville in a bad part of town? you never know what kind of weapon anyone has on them when you're in a vehicle. me, personally, i want to be able to protect myself and my children if someone so decides to threaten us. if you happen to piss off a doped up junky, do you really think your words will work for your defense? i'm not trying to promote whipping out weapons in front of children by any means, but pulling a coat to the side or just holding the weapon close and in front of you to let the guy know you're not standing for his nonsense is not inappropriate. i'm assuming the man would have told his daughter to stay in the car where her sight would be slightly limited should he stand between her and the other man (which is what i would have done). either way, be prepared or be dead. you never know what kind of day someone has had, if they just got out of prison for murdering 10 people, or what kind of weapon they have, or what drugs they're on ... so i don't take any chances. especially not with my children. just my opinion.

By: rebeccaperona on 10/28/10 at 11:15

xhexx ... i don't think you're a pervert or a bully. i agree with you. my husband is from memphis. we don't stand for that nonsense.

Everybody has their ways of handling a serious situation when it occurs. Nobody can really say what they would do untill the moment of truth. Some would probably carry out what they say while others may resort to other measures than what they may have thought! Personally, the way I figure I would handle the sitaution is I would quicky put my superman costume from when I was six and beat the crap out of him! No, seriously, "IF" I saw the opportunity, and I was packing, I would nonchalauntly pull my gun out and try to shoot out a knee cap or try hitting a non-life threatening area of his body. BUT, yet at the same time, bearing in mind that there other people all around me and I need to take that in consideration because I don't want to hit an innocent bystander. This is MY take of how I "THINK" I would react. You do what you HAVE to do in ANY given circumstance to protect LIFE and LIMB!!!

By: rebeccaperona on 10/28/10 at 11:43

well said yucchhii. and to protect your children...

By: rebeccaperona on 10/28/10 at 11:43

those of you who have kids, know what i'm talking about

Bedwetter? xhexx, you are sick!

By: NewYorker1 on 10/28/10 at 2:18

hummmm... and this ISN'T Antioch. LOL... Hilarious.

By: gid on 10/28/10 at 2:46

Pocketknive ?? Ha. I think I would have just laughed at him.

By: richgoose on 10/28/10 at 4:12

XHEXX.......Your comment about the fellow being a "bedwetter" was in my mind correct. If he was not a "bedwetter" he was certainly someone that was very short in masculinity. I can see him now nervously calling 911 screaming help, help, help.

Then again knife wielder should have recognized that he was powerless to change the situation that he found himself. Whatever the personality of the "bedwetter" was or the fault that he felt for the "bedwetter" was not going to be changed for the better by cutting his throat.

By: TITAN1 on 10/28/10 at 4:19

richgoose, you are a fraud.

By: richgoose on 10/28/10 at 5:31

Titan1, And you sir, are just passing through.

Titan1, And you sir, are just passing through.

Just wish all you folks had just one brain and it was in your head, not your pants or your glove compartment.

By: rebeccaperona on 10/29/10 at 9:19

dogmrb, i think you might want to check your pants for a pair just to make sure you have some ... pretty sure titan1 doesn't have any ...

By: TITAN1 on 10/29/10 at 12:34

Poor rebecca, thinks everyone has to act like they are really tough to be someone. You probably love gangs, too. Too, bad you can't travel back in time, then you could live in the old west where you could shoot someone who looked at you wrong.

By: rebeccaperona on 10/29/10 at 1:06

why would i love gangs? what is wrong with you? i seriously think you need professional help. you assume all kinds of things about people that is incorrect. does it make you feel better about yourself to talk about people like that? i'm not trying to "act tough" ... if i'm by myself in downtown nashville-either my doors are locked or i have some sort of weapon on me at all times and i will avoid suspicious looking characters at all costs and am a big chicken, but if one of my children is with me, i take NO risks whatsoever and will take out any viable threat that comes our way. i don't play when it comes to my children. you must not have children or you would understand. protecting yourself and your family does not make you brainless. maybe you and dogmrb should hug a tree ... it might make you feel better. but don't do it in a bad part of town because your words won't get you anywhere as far as personal defense.

By: TITAN1 on 10/29/10 at 1:13

Stop twisting things around! You agreed with the poster on the "bedwetter" comment and that is just tasteless! Everyone who does not carry a weapon is not weak! Go back and see what you agreed with. It was a very classless post by xhexx and you agreed with him. Why don't you two meet at sundown and draw your guns on each other! FYI, I am a grandfather of 3, but I do not have to be violent to protect them!

By: rebeccaperona on 10/29/10 at 1:20

neither xhexx nor i said that non carriers are weak. and i said i agree with him - yet another generalization that you just read way too much in to. i agreed with the point of his comment, not necessarily the specifics. it wasn't classless, it was factual (besides the whole "bedwetter" part that has everyone's panties in a wad). you don't have to be violent to protect them??? um, exactly how would you protect them if you were getting physically attacked by someone??? just let them and you get the snot beat out of you all??? i don't suggest it. and that's not considered protection.

By: TITAN1 on 10/29/10 at 3:24

You call someone a bedwetter, you are calling them weak. How would you survive without a gun? I believe father and daughter are doing well. The more people who have permits to carry, the more people we have carrying that are a danger to others. I hear talk about how people with permits are very responsible. Tell that to the family of the unarmed man who was killed a while back by an irresponsible security guard. Just because someone has a permit to carry does not mean they are responsible. Anyone can take training and pass a test, then do whatever they want. Hell, people get a drivers license every day, but there are many on the road who don't obey the laws and have no respect for others. Yes, the bedwetter comment was classless.

By: richgoose on 10/30/10 at 10:04

TITAN1.....You appear to be biased in favor of "bedwetters"

By: TITAN1 on 10/30/10 at 11:44

frankbrown/richgoose, calling someone a bedwetter because he doesn't carry a gun is classless. So it is not surprising at all to see that you agree with these two.

By: richgoose on 10/30/10 at 1:01

I do not own or carry a gun. In the case of the "Bedwetter" my guess is that he was the one who instigated the motivation of the a-hole to pull his knife. The "bedwetter" then decided that he had better call the police before he was exposed as a true coward. He probably was as a schoolboy the one who tattletaled to the teacher.

I always love pulling your chain.

By: TITAN1 on 10/30/10 at 8:12

Were you there? BTW, you don't pull my chain. I just call you out on your BS. You get your jollies by trying to piss off people whether you really believe what you are saying or not. You are a very unhappy and pitiful person.

By: rebeccaperona on 11/1/10 at 11:18

now now boys. and i didn't necessarily say that all gun carriers are responsible. and you say i twist things around. puh! i understand they are not all responsible and there are some people who should not have any kind of weapon in their possession; HOWEVER, if the bad guys can get ahold of them, i want to be able to as well. fight fire with fire. i'd rather have one and not need it, than need one and not have it.
