Gregory Suggs was 16 when he allegedly shot and killed Deonte Darrington, 18, in January 2010. But last Friday, he was indicted by the Davidson County grand jury on one count of first-degree murder and will face the charge as an adult.
The murder investigation took more than a year before police filed a charge, and Suggs was transferred from a juvenile facility in another part of the state back to Nashville to face the charge in October, according to Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron.
Aaron said the investigation by MNPD’s East Precinct revealed that the shooting was the result of a marijuana-related dispute.
A juvenile court judge ruled at a transfer hearing that Suggs, now 18, would be tried as an adult, so his charges were bound over to the grand jury.
Suggs was booked into Hill Detention Center on Jan. 18. Additional details about Suggs’ other, less serious, criminal offenses aren’t available to the public because they occurred while he was a juvenile.
