Gov.-elect Bill Haslam Monday announced Nashville insurance regulatory attorney Julie Mix McPeak as commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance.
McPeak will replace Leslie Newman, a Phil Bredesen appointee who served four years in the position.
Newman praised Haslam for the selection, noting McPeak has "consistently demonstrated an exemplary grasp of the issues within the insurance industry."
McPeak, 41, is an insurance regulatory attorney at the Nashville office of Burr & Forman, LLP. She has more than 12 years of legal and administrative experience in state government, recently serving as executive director of the Kentucky Office of Insurance.
“I’m pleased that Julie McPeak will be joining the administration,” Haslam said in a release. “She brings a wealth of knowledge in insurance from the public and private sector, and I look forward to working with her as we tackle the specific challenges facing the industry and state.”
The department includes the Consumer Affairs, Insurance, Securities, TennCare Oversight, Fire Prevention and Regulatory Board divisions.
