The Tennessee Supreme Court last week suspended At-large Metro Councilman Jerry Maynard’s law license for 18 months retroactive as of Jan. 25, 2010, when Maynard was temporarily suspended from practicing law, according to a court release.

The decision means Maynard’s license suspension should end in a few weeks.

“It’s great news for me,” Maynard said. “After two years, we finally got the ruling from the Supreme Court, and I am excited. It’s very good new for my family. With God’s blessing, I hope to be practicing law in the fall.”

Maynard said he would need to apply for reinstatement to receive a new license, which he plans to do.

Maynard had been suspended because he had continued to work as general counsel for a health care provider until 2009 even though he had been suspended for noncompliance with continuing legal education in September 2006, the release says.

Maynard, along with all four other current at-large members, is running for a second council term. Election Day is Aug. 4, with early voting beginning July 15.
