A Davidson County jury on Wednesday found Leonel Lopez guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend last year.
Police charged Lopez with murder and accused him of severely beating Anna Cruz at a bar where she worked. The assault occurred after Lopez and his friend were shooting pool at the bar on the same day he moved out of his girlfriend’s home.
When Cruz attempted to shut the bar down early, Lopez punched and kicked her, causing life-threatening injuries. Cruz died at the hospital several days later.
Lopez’s sentencing hearing is set for Nov. 29.
