Accused cocaine dealer Marquale Burke, who was wounded after allegedly striking a Metro police officer with his car Tuesday night, was released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center early Wednesday and is now jailed.

Burke, 27, who received three-year sentences in 2006 and 2009 for felony cocaine convictions, is now charged with selling cocaine, possessing cocaine for resale, possession of marijuana, possession of Ecstasy and possession of drug scales.

His bond is set at $77,000.

On Tuesday night, a police operative working with the North Precinct’s Crime Suppression Unit made arrangements to buy crack cocaine from Burke. The transaction took place at approximately 8 p.m. in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant on Gallatin Road.

When Undercover Officer Aaron Cothran ordered Burke from the vehicle, Burke allegedly accelerated his car, striking Cothran.  Police said Cothran felt threatened and fired his pistol at Burke. Burke was hit twice, once in each shoulder. He was treated and discharged from VUMC shortly after midnight.

Cothran, a three-year police department veteran, is on routine administrative assignment pending completion of the preliminary shooting investigation.

I believe that the officer fired a total of four shots, hitting the scumbag twice. Pretty good shooting under the circumstances. Good training paid off for Officer Cothran. Ideally for the lawabiding, tax paying citizenship the two shots that hit (and maybe all four) should have been a little closer together, like in the middle of the target intstead of the outside edges. Might have saved us taxpayers from the costs of a trial and resulting incarceration. But, when one has been attacked with a car I'd say hitting the target at all is quite an accomplishment. Keep up the good work, MNPD.

If anybody should have been killed, it should have been the cop. I HATE cops.

Okay, so three years in 2006 and 3 in 2009 = 6 yrs. He should not have been out of jail before next year. His bond at $77k? He's probably already out as I write this. What a joke!
