A gun that was bought to protect a Donelson store and its workers did just the opposite Tuesday night when the store owner accidentally shot his 23-year-old employee, Metro Police said.
The 44-year-old owner of Chico’s Mercado on Briley Parkway told police he was showing the recently purchased handgun to the worker when it accidentally discharged.
The worker was hit once in the stomach. He is listed in critical but stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, police said.
Police said the owner told them he bought the gun to keep behind the register for protection.
No charges have been filed, but the investigation is still in progress.
Police have not released the names of the two men involved.
