Metro Police tell WSMV Channel 4 they have arrested two men in connection with the shooting of a Metro police officer along Interstate 40 in Bellevue on Thursday afternoon.

Police spokesman Don Aaron told Channel 4 Sgt. Mark Chesnut, 44, was hit multiple times at a traffic stop at about 1:30 p.m. Aaron said Chesnut was entering information into his in-car computer when police believe the suspect, who had been pulled over in a Dodge Magnum, walked up and opened fire near exit 196 in Bellevue.

Aaron said that Chesnut, who was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center, was in critical condition but alert and talking. Chesnut, a 22-year veteran of the Metro Police Department, was shot at least once in the upper body and was wearing body armor.

Aaron also said that Metro police were able to chase down the two suspects, arresting them at Hermitage Avenue and Fairfield Avenue. The suspects' identities has not been released.
