Home Brew Day May 5 in Hillsboro Village
National Home Brew Day, an annual event co-sponsored by the Music City Brewers and Bosco's Nashville Brewing Company, will be held May 5 in the parking lot behind Bosco's in Hillsboro Village.
A festival atmosphere is expected outside and the brew pub, Bosco's, will be open for business as well.
"People are going to be out there with their Cajun cookers and their 12-gallon vats boiling this stuff up in the parking lot," Marc Stengel, a new member of the Music City Brewers said. For more information go to http://musiccitybrewers.com.
In beermaking, a liquid, "wort" is formed by soaking mash in hot water and then fermenting it to make beer. According to Stengel, wort is boiled into a thick, sugary, sweet syrup that is doctored with hops and other seasonings.
"That takes about a morning to prepare because it has to come down in temperature so that it doesn't kill the yeast," Stengel said. "As soon as it gets cool enough to pitch the yeast, they do that and then it gets sealed off. At that point, it is not beer. It takes another two weeks before it becomes beer."
