Metro Police charged a man Monday night in connection with a shooting death of Jeffrey Beaty and the beating of his estranged wife.
South Precinct detectives charged Raymond Swett, Jr. with criminal homicide for Sunday’s 11:15 p.m. shooting death of Jeffrey Beaty in the parking lot of Pagoda Apartments, 320 Welch Road.
Swett, 39, also was also charged with attempted criminal homicide for attacking the victim’s estranged wife, Jessica Cain.
The Metro Police investigation shows that Swett and Cain became involved in a dispute over a cocaine purchase Cain was trying to make. Swett apparently left the complex, only to return a short time later. According to reports, he is alleged to then have kicked in Cain’s apartment door and beat her.
A neighbor reported the assault to Beaty, who lived in another building at the Pagoda complex. Witnesses told police that Swett shot Beaty as Beaty called to him from the parking lot.
Beaty, 39, died at the scene.
Cain, who said Swett struck her on the head with the gun, was treated and released at a local hospital.
Swett is being held without bail pending a hearing this week. He has prior convictions in Nashville for robbery, theft, drug possession, public intoxication, trespassing, criminal impersonation, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
