West Precinct detectives are working to identify the person who shot 59-year-old Robert Mitchell to death early Tuesday morning in his West Wind apartment at 3902 Alabama Ave.

According to police, a neighbor discovered the door to Mitchell’s unit open just after 5 a.m., and looked inside to find Mitchell lying on the floor.

Responding officers found Mitchell was dead from an apparent gunshot wound to his lower body. A witness later told police they heard a gunshot sometime between 1:45 and 2 a.m.

Police believe Mitchell had just answered his door when he was shot. The motive has not been determined, but police do not believe robbery was the motive.

Anyone with information on who would want to harm Robert Mitchell can call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME or send an electronic tip to Crime Stoppers by texting the word “CASH” along with their message to 274637 (CRIMES).

Those who do so can remain anonymous and qualify for a $1,000 cash reward.
