A decommissioned Metro police officer indicted on first-degree murder charges for allegedly shooting his wife is set to be arraigned Friday morning.

Metro homicide detectives arrested officer Deon Lamont Cartmell, 23, after a Davidson County grand jury indicted him for the March 16 death of 24-year-old Shari Monique Cartmell in the couple’s home at 3815 Saunders Ave.

Deon Cartmell initially told police his wife had committed suicide while they were seated on a living room couch. Police said the following investigation uncovered evidence inconsistent with accounts of the incident given by Cartmell.

Cartmell, previously a patrol officer for the East Precinct, was decommissioned the day after his wife died and placed on administrative assignment during the investigation. He graduated from the police academy in July 2009.

Police arrested Cartmell on May 28, the same day the grand jury filed its indictment against him. He is being held in the Metro Jail in lieu of $300,000 bond.
