Two Metro Police officers are on administrative assignment after they returned fire on a group of men engaged in a gunfight late Saturday night, police said.

West Precinct Officers Howard Martin and Steven Jones were on patrol near the intersection of 32nd Avenue North and Clifton Avenue when they heard shots fired at 9:15 p.m. Saturday.

Police said the officers came upon a group of men engaged in a gunfight. When they told the men to drop their weapons, one of the suspects fired at officers with a shotgun, police said.

Both officers returned fired. The officers were unhurt.

A short time after the shooting, a man was treated at General Hospital for a minor gunshot wound to the buttocks. It is unclear if he was involved in the shootout.

No one is in custody in connection to the incident, police said.

The preliminary investigation indicates Officers Martin and Jones fired their weapons in defense of themselves and others, police said. They are both on routine administrative assignment while the investigation is conducted.

That's acceptable shooting for night time.
