Police search for man wanted in murder of TSU student

Police are searching for an 18-year-old suspect in last week’s murder of a Tennessee State University student.

Marquez Fontaine Mallard is wanted for allegedly shooting Jonathan Finley, 24, last Wednesday night in the 2500 block of Jefferson Street. Metro police issued warrants charging Mallard with criminal homicide, aggravated assault and aggravated burglary.

According to police, Finley and another TSU student drove to a CITGO store to get a drink and picked up a former student who asked for a ride to a friend’s house. When they arrived at the house, they reported seeing Mallard outside during an apparent burglary. When they tried to drive off, Mallard allegedly shot several times into at the their vehicle, hitting Finley, who was in the backseat. The others drove Finley to Skyline Medical Center, where he later died.

Mallard is described as 6-feet-2-inches tall and weighing 210 pounds. His last known residence is on W.H. Davis Drive. He is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Police urge anyone seeing him or knowing his whereabouts to call the Emergency Communications Center at 862-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
