All levels of Tennessee government wasted more than $260 million in tax dollars, according to the 2010 Pork Report which was released Tuesday.

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research partnered with Citizens Against Government Waste to issue the fifth annual report on waste, fraud and abuse in the state.

Some of most egregious instances of waste included $15 million for swimming pool in Kingsport, $1.5 million to help smokers kick the habit and $450,000 for statues in downtown Nashville.

Examples of government waste, fraud, and abuse outlined in the 2010 Pork Report come from state and local government budgets, media reports, appropriations bills, state audits, and independent research conducted by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

Anybody who takes the Center for Policy Research seriously needs to have their own heads examined.

I heard a report on the radio this morning about this document, and someone from Citizens Against was railing about the amount of money spent on dog parks.

He cited a particular park where over $100k was spent on improvements and claimed "it's not even for people, it's for dogs!"

I very nearly drove off the road at that public display of stupidity.

So HokeyPokey are you saying that $15,000,000 wasn't spent on a Kingsport swimming pool?

Was this mornings radio program the first time you've gotten a sensational angle from the media?

Without knowing all the details (and I sure didn't read them in the report, I'd say the 15 mil covered more than just a 'swimming pool.'

The document itself is more of an exercise in snark than in financial judgment.

"non-partisan" my foot.

During these troubling economic times we should be spending our money where it creates or saves jobs and money. The old school of politics where you vote for my "turtle farm project" and I'll vote for your "save the frog project" so we can both get re-elected should be gone. You see, the reason for this crap is because both politians know they have'nt done anything and their sole purpose is to keep a job where thay can keep getting away with doing nothing. The same thought applies to the other public figures as well.

Here's a thought! Do your job, look out for the general puplic and you will get relected.

Back to basics & common sense!!!

I am STILL trying to figure out what the $15m "swimming pool" project refers to.

Is it the one at the Warriors' Path State Park?

Here it is:

KINGSPORT — The city of Kingsport and the Greater Kingsport Family YMCA have had discussions about co-locating a proposed $12.6 million aquatics center with the YMCA’s new facility, possibly in the Meadowview area of town.

City leaders have discussed replacing the aging Legion Pool with an aquatics center for years. The 32-year-old pool continues to degrade, loses about 30,000 gallons of water a day, and reasonable repairs are no longer feasible.

Therefore, city officials have included an aquatics center in a proposed capital projects list. The idea being discussed is a $12.6 million indoor/outdoor facility with two indoor pools (25-yard by 50-meter lap pool and a four-lane warm pool) and two outdoor pools (an activity pool with two slides and a zero-depth children’s water area).

This project is about as much a "swimming pool" as a fish hatchery is a "fishing pond."

It doesn't surprise me that Clint Brewer left the "think tank," he probably needed to be around intelligent people for a change.
