Professional hockey not new to South

Before there were National Hockey League teams in Nashville, Tampa and southern Florida there was the Atlanta Flames. Before the Phillips Arena there was the Omni. And before the expansion goaltending tandem of the Predators Mike Dunham and Tomas Vokoun there was the Flames combo in the net of Phil Myre and Dan Bouchard.

Myre, who serves as a professional scout and goaltending coach for the Ottawa Senators, spent most of last week in Nashville and Atlanta watching the Predators and the Thrashers. And even though the Flames burned out in Atlanta and headed north to Calgary for the 1980-81 season, Myre remembers fondly his time as a hockey pioneer in a land where ice was something you put into a tall glass of tea back in .
