Rep. Curry Todd refuses plea deal, has court date set

Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 2:53pm

Rep. Curry Todd, the Shelby County lawmaker charged with DUI and unlawful possession of a handgun, declined a plea deal during a brief appearance for a settlement hearing in Davidson County General Sessions Court Tuesday.

Todd's attorney, high-profile Nashville defense lawyer Worrick Robinson, declined to comment on the specifics of the district attorney's offer. Todd is set to return to court Jan. 10.

In a short statement, Todd apologized for the events of Oct. 11, when Metro police said he failed a sobriety test and refused a breathalyzer. According to police, they found a loaded .38-caliber handgun stuffed between the center console and driver's seat of a GMC Envoy.

Todd was pulled over at the intersection of Blair Boulevard and 21st Avenue South, driving towards downtown at 60 mph — the posted speed limit is 40 mph — and swerving between lanes, police said.

Todd, who championed the state's controversial guns-in-bars legislation, said, "Everyone is capable of making mistakes."

Todd refused to comment on his political future or on nagging allegations that he is living with a lobbyist in Green Hills. Robinson called Todd's behavior "uncharacteristic."

According to Shelby County court documents, Todd's divorce went final in the days preceding the arrest.

"I can't comment on the facts of what happened in those days," Robinson said. "I think all of that will come out in time."

Republican lawmaker and Lobbyist cavorting? Say it's not so!
Majority rules in more ways than just fund raising and votes, I suppose!

Fight it all the way Todd!

Does he know someone that will get him out of this mess?

Einstien62,
That's funny because it never comes across his usual hate filled lop sided rants! It's funny how fast they flip flop when they are in the wrong.

A pnishment should fit the crime, sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

If I were recommending an appropriate sentence, I would suggest Rep Curry be assigned the task to visit five bars on Saturday night or a Friday night for three months, and during the visit, ask every person seated at the bar if they are carrying a firearm. Just ask the question...that's all....

Two things:
First: "Brown's Diner" is right there- full bar.
So is Harris Teeter, beer only, thanks to the geniuses who run this state.
If the Brown's bartender over served him, sue.
Second: what was this guy's BAC level?
Since he refused, we'll never know. A cop's, "smelling of alcohol and red, watery eyes", won't hold up in court.
Get him on speeding and reckless driving.
He's very lucky he didn't have a collision where he hurt someone.

The man has the right to his day in court and will likely get off with a speeding ticket and a bunch of community service hours somewhere (TN DUI laws are so complicated, it is a wonder that anyone gets convicted)...but geees, 60mph thru that area of 21st Avenue? Ambulances headed to Vandy going thru there don't even go that fast. Where was he going in such a hurry?

what if he was a Kennedy?OH, those Kennedy's will be boys..............who cares , he will get his day in court

Curry Todd bellied up to the bar, got hammered and drove like an A-hole, with a loaded gun on the front seat. He has since clammed up, lawyered up and hunkered down....he's not resigning, he's fighting.

From the article: "nagging allegations that he is living with a lobbyist in Green Hills"...WTF? This gun-toting, hard-drinking lawmaker is also sleeping with a hottie lobbyist? The guy's gotta be the pillar of his church, right?

This is funny stuff...you folks tolerate this crap? In New York, Rep. Anthony "Weinergate" Weiner committed a far less egregious offense and they roasted that grandstanding hot dog...and NY is supposed to be the liberal state and TN is supposed to be so conservative....that's BS, baby.

When lawmakers have no shame, no remorse and no ethics they need to be recalled or voted out of office...do the right thing....throw this bum out.

Brown's Diner is BEER ONLY...oh ....and iced tea.

By: dargent7 on 11/2/11 at 10:21

Sorry, I stand corrected.
But, someone, somewhere, "over-served" the A-hole.

Well, he's already lost his license for a year so it'll be convenient to carpool with his lobbyist boyfriend, should he get off. I think he needs 48 hours at Blackthorn in an orange jumpsuit, TV and lights on all night on a cellblock with 40 other dudes.

By: gohomenow on 11/2/11 at 3:40

Nail him like he's an average, every day guy - not a politician who can afford a high dollar attorney.... Liberty and Justice for All (who can afford it) !

Moonglow1: What crap-trying to pin his behavior on his divorce a few days prior to the drunk driving charge. Please: he can't be too broken up since he is living with a lobbyist in GH. Regardless-give this joker a long prison sentence. Revoke his gun license for good. Tell the GH lobbyist to dump the bum.he and his tea party jerks rammed the "guns n bars" law down our throats. I bet he wasn't diving at Randy Raburn's restaurant that night.

By: Moonglow1 on 11/3/11 at 7:34

Moonglow1: meant to say driving home after eating at Sunset Grill Raburn's restaurant. Randy was outspoken about the guns n bars law. This drunk gun toting jerk pushed this law down our throats. Made TN look like a bunch of red necked hicks. Well he is a red necked hick. The road in question Blair and Hillsboro is not that wide so he could have killed someone driving 60 and swerving. Apology NOT accepted. I want him behind bars for a very long time. .

Can't wait to see him have the book thrown at him! Hypocritical typical Neocon. Jackass.
