Senate offers sales tax hike

A state Senate committee approved a bill Tuesday to raise state sales tax one-half percent, the first movement by senators toward a solution to the funding side of the 2001-2002 state budget.

The bill (SB 0348/HB 1778) was approved by the Senate Finance, Ways & Means Committee early Tuesday morning, 7-4. Among the senators voting against it were Sen. Bob Rochelle (D-Lebanon), sponsor of an income tax plan, and Sen. Doug Henry (D-Nashville), who said the sales-tax hike does not address the state
