A week after saying they would not hire a college coach, the Cleveland Browns reversed direction, hiring University of Miami coach Butch Davis to fill their opening as head coach. The Hurricanes coach had been in the midst of renegotiating his contract after taking his team to a 10-1 regular season record, along with a Sugar Bowl victory over Florida. Davis, 49, has NFL experience: he coached the defense for the Dallas Cowboys from 1989-94, and won two Super Bowls in the process.
