At-large Councilman Ronnie Steine was named chairman of the most important Metro Council committee on Monday.

Vice Mayor Diane Neighbors announced her appointees for committee chairs in a media release. Steine was named chairman of the budget and finance committee, which oversees Metro’s $1.5 billion budget and votes first on many of the most critical bills that go through Council’s legislative branch.

District 7 Councilman Erik Cole was appointed chairman of the convention, tourism and public entertainment facilities committee. Cole’s committee will hear legislation pertaining to the proposed new convention center.

Also of note, District 16 Councilwoman Anna Page was named chairwoman of the rules and confirmation committee, which will consider appointments by Mayor Karl Dean to the newly formed Convention Center Authority. The new volunteer board will eventually oversee development of the proposed $635 million Music City Center.

Steine takes the reins of the budget and finance committee in a year when Council will consider a funding package for the convention center and attached public/private hotel projects. The committee will also consider a potential property tax increase, which has been avoided during Dean and Council’s first two years in office.

The full list of committee chairs appointed by Neighbors is below.

Budget and finance: Steine;
charter revision: Darren Jernigan;
codes, fair and farmer’s market: Rip Ryman;
education: Kristine LaLonde;
federal grants review: Sandra Moore;
health, hospitals and social services: Charlie Tygard;
parks, library and recreation: Lonnell Matthews;
personnel, public information, human relations and housing: Phil Claiborne;
public safety, beer and regulated beverages: Buddy Baker;
public works: Walter Hunt;
rules, confirmations and public elections: Page;
transportation and aviation: Bo Mitchell.

surprised that a person most familiar with government finance didn't get it. Instead just another dude who doesn't know there is no such thing as a rainy day fund and cant tell the difference between a CAFR or a Crapper.

When did shoplifting become a job requirement?

Which one is most familiar with government finance? Best as I can tell none of them can add.

Hope this is the end of Diane Neighbors' political career! Any one this dumb isn't fit to serve in public office.

Congrats to a good man! Jeff, I guess you think you are perfect.

T1 - Not surprised that Steine (in your narrow scope) rates right up there with spitman!

As a semi-professional day-care worker I'm surprised at the Vice-mayor's decision on this and a couple of other appointments. I'm sure the MCC supporters will throw her a big fund raiser at the appropriate time.

If only there were someone on the board that works or worked in the municipal finance business. Those people are professional and know government finance better than mayors do. They know where the pertinent information is hidden and know where budgets are manipulated. They also know that the budget document that governments spend so much time pushing and glossying up are poor sources of information. The CAFR are where the bodies are hidden.

If only.

You 5 should get a room. Titan1 thanks for calling it as you see it...

Go figure! Diane Neighbors appoints the single CONVICTED THIEF on the entire Metro Council to oversee an OUT OF CONTROL BILLION DOLLAR PROJECT! These folks are nuts! Dean, Neighbors, Stein-"lifter", and all their lap dogs need to go. These are the same folks that spent OUR TAX DOLLARS to hire a lobbying form to convince OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES to ignore our will on the Convention Center despite its obvious predisposition to massive fraude, abuse, and failure. What a bunch of frauds! Vote them ALL out.

Can't believe it. Ex thief heads up finance committee.
What a mess! He might ve a good guy but don't we have someone better.

prod, you and Titan 1 should get a room. Your accolade should have read, "Titan 1, thanks for calling it as I see it".

I like Steine and am more than willing to overllok and not rehash his past stupid mistake but he is not the man for this position. He has definitely chugged a convention center full of the Deanie-Weenie Kool Aid.

I do notice Diane 'Car Wash' Neighbors appointed a lot of cronies and suck-ups to these posts. Erik Cole is the only one placed on an important committee that knows better about the Convention Center and asked questions early on, I hope he does the right thing eventually and votes 'no' or his district will do likewise with him.

Congratulations to Mr. Steine. I believe he is capable of this job and I wish him well!
