A carjacking tale meant to explain how a 31-year-old man was beaten to death Monday night was a lie, and the beating was probably drug-related, police said Wednesday.

A group of men who drove Brian L. Horton, a wanted fugitive, to Skyline Medical Center early Tuesday told police his injuries came from a violent carjacking.

But police believe Horton was picked up on Owendale Drive earlier Monday night and was likely beaten while being driven to north Nashville. Horton had no identification on him when he was dropped off at the hospital, and police identified him by his fingerprints.

U.S. Marshals wanted Horton for violation of supervised release following his conviction on cocaine possession with the intent to distribute and firearm possession charges.

According to Metro police, Horton registered with the department as an ex-convict in October 2007. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
