A 26-year veteran firefighter remains in the hospital Friday after he and another firefighter were injured while fighting an East Nashville house fire Thursday night.

Units were dispatched just after 8:30 p.m. Thursday to the fire, which is believed to have started in a first-floor office inside the home at 2612 Airpark Drive. The two firefighters were injured while fighting the fire.

According to the Nashville Fire Department, David Powell, 56, was trying to exit the burning house to replace his air tank when he fell down a flight of steps into the basement, leaving him without air. He was taken Vanderbilt Hospital were he remained on Friday morning.

Powell is expected to recover.

Captain James Trollinger, 61, received burns to his face, but was treated and released.

The Fire Marshal’s Office had not yet determined the cause of the fire, and is still investigating.
