Two people were killed when an ambulance slammed into the back of a Tennessee Department of Transportation HELP truck on Interstate 65 North near Wedgewood Avenue.

The ambulance was transporting an elderly woman who had just received dialysis treatment to her retirement home when the vehicle, for unknown reasons, left the roadway and struck the TDOT truck, Metro Police said.

David Cline, 36, an off-duty Franklin firefighter, was driving the Rural/Metro private ambulance. He and patient Sue Bly, 78, were killed in the 3 p.m. crash.

Off-duty Nashville firefighter Evans Johnson, 51, who was riding in the rear of the ambulance, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is in critical condition.

The driver of the TDOT truck, Robert Green, 60, of Columbia, was also transported to Vanderbilt where he is in stable condition.
