Two Tenn. Scouts groups oppose lifting ban on gays

Two Boy Scouts councils in Tennessee said Tuesday they will not support a proposal to partially lift the group's long-standing exclusion of gays.

The Nashville-based Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts said it will vote to support the current national membership policy at the Boy Scouts of America's annual meeting during the week of May 20 in Texas.

Later Tuesday, the Jackson-based West Tennessee Area Council said it does not support a change in the policy.

The Boy Scouts of America last month proposed a policy saying no youth may be denied membership "on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone." A ban would continue on leadership roles for adults who are openly gay or lesbian.

The current policy does not grant membership to openly gay individuals.

Hugh Travis, scout executive for the Middle Tennessee Council, said surveys have revealed that the council's parents and leaders believe the current membership policy is a "core value of the Scout Oath and Law."

The council says it represents 35,000 youth and adults in Middle Tennessee. Board President Lee Beaman says it is the council's duty to back the current policy.

"We are continuing to uphold the standards, beliefs and traditions Scouting has held for over 100 years," Beaman said in the statement.

Clif Morris, the West Tennessee council's scout executive, said surveys showed that around 90 percent of local constituents either totally support or somewhat support the BSA's current position.

Morris said the West Tennessee council has about 7,000 youth and adult members in 20 counties. He said the council intends to vote against a change in policy at the BSA's meeting in Grapevine, Texas, later this month.

In Tennessee the Teachers plan to be your influence for 100 years and i heard that part of their job security is to take it up the butt and say 'Ohh God' while they do it.

Gay Cub Scouts ? In USA they want to make me turn Gay even though i am not Gay and i suffered a Severe Gay Bashing at the National Guard Amory of Lawrenceburg Tennessee . The state had a hypnotist erase my memory after they forced me to apply for 'poor benefits' .

Not Gay and never received funds from a lawsuit;

No surprise about the Middle Tenn politically correct board supporting this new
proposed policy. I doubt they surveyed anyone or just selected ones to arrive
at their organization destroying decision.

govskeptic, you read the second paragraph wrong. Middle Tennessee is voting to support the current policy that bans homosexuals, not the proposed policy. And as you said, no surprise.

This is no surprise; the Volunteer state still clings to the old values system in which heterosexual Christian white males are the dominant members of society....as their God had intended.

The Boy Scouts began as a paramilitary training program for American boys; for some reason, the Scouts have not kept pace with societal evolution; the US military is now accepting openly gay recruits....but the Boy Scouts apparently did not get the memo.

The 12 points of the Scout Law do not include "Tolerance"....never did....never will.

When I was a scout, the troops were all monolithic in a sense...you had the Catholic troop, the Baptist troop, the Methodist troop etc.....there was even an all-black troop.....it was an "us versus them" sort of a deal...esprit de corps development....hardening of prejudices and contempt for folks unlike us.

Apparently, the old hate-based traditions are alive and well in Tennessee....Yeee Haaawww!!

By: Loner on 5/8/13 at 6:42

WTC is back....Oy! Still struggling with his sexual orientation and mental health issues....bless his heart.

I somehow figured Loner would comment on this article. Just sayin'.

Loner, with the so-called "societal evolution" that you mention has come the demise of American society. With this "societal evolution" has come the decline of American exceptionalism. I'm proud of our Boy Scouts for standing up for their beliefs. I'm proud of their leaders for promoting traditional American values and helping young men grow into their adulthood embracing those values. And surely, just like the rest of us, they should not have this oxymoron ("gay") of a lifestyle (which is what it is) shoved down our throats (so to speak).

Bring it on, Loner.

Loner, not everyone is able to give up their core values as easily as others. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and therefore, do not believe in gay marriage. I do not want it shoved down my throat. And forcing it on innocent children who are just wanting to live life and grow up is not right. I agree with Specter47.

Of courses, the right-wing Christians are against anything that should be a freedom if it goes against their narrow beliefs. I do not want to hear from the GOP that someone is trampling on their rights when that is all that they do.

Bravo! I am so sick of the gay agenda. Just another liberal ploy to destroy anything ungay.

It’s just a matter of time. Once the old-heads and baby boomers retire and/or die off and generation X and Y start running this country, America will finally start feeling like the America of equal right for all citizens regardless of race and/or sexual orientation.

Cling to your hate, as if it were a family heirloom, Specter.....but, love will overpower the hate....your species is endangered, Spec....and that's a very good thing...good riddance to the haters.

By: NewYorker1 on 5/8/13 at 9:07

The funny thing is, the Scouts are already full of gay men and boys. LOL… I think it’s hilarious.

My question for you straight men is why do you think all gay men want you? The gay men that I know are EXTREMELY picky. If you are overweight, can’t dress, uneducated, and don’t make good money, then most gay men will not give you the time of day. LOL…

I can only assume that most of those commenting have never been a Boy Scout.

Tolerance, etc. are fine in the classroom or workplace. But in a pup tent while on an overnight scout trip, scouts of the same gender are preferred. It is no place for social experimenting or political correctness.

By: NewYorker1 on 5/8/13 at 10:25

FleFew, your comment suggest that because you spend the night in a tent with a gay person that you are automatically subjected to some sexual experiment? WOW!

By: govskeptic on 5/9/13 at 5:21

Not sure how I jumped to the wrong conclusion in my first posting on this. Glad to
see the Middle Tenn group is doing the exactly right thing on this issue. The
US Supreme Court has already given the right decision and it's hard to under-
stand why the National Scout Council has even brought this subject back up.

By: Loner on 5/9/13 at 6:52

I was a Boy Scout...a long time ago...late fifties....in those days, it was an us-versus -them deal...every troop had a distinct lack of diversity...churches usually sponsored the troops; so, the troops were all same-faith affairs...which meant that they were same-race troops...of course, being BOY scouts, the troops were all same-sex troops....males only.

That paradigm has not really changed, has it?

Back in the day, if somebody had wanted to start a gays-only troop, that probably would have been tolerated...they had all-Negro Boy Scout troops in those days, so why not an all-gay troop? Such an all-gay troop would have been mocked and spat upon, but since it reflected the us-versus-them paradigm, it probably would have been accepted by the national BSA leadership.

By: Loner on 5/9/13 at 6:59

When I was a Scout...the churches were all ethnicity-related too...so you had the Polish-American Catholic troops and the Italian-American Catholic troops, for example.....not enough Jews in my hometown for a Jews-only troop; but I'm sure that down in NY City, they existed...and may still exist....like I said, tolerance was not held in high esteem; it was equated with weakness and submission.

Looks like that old ways are alive and well in TN.

By: Loner on 5/9/13 at 7:02

Looks like the old ways are alive and well, not just in Tennessee, but throughout the Old South....am I wrong on that?

By: dargent7 on 5/9/13 at 9:49

What a shocker!
Probably half the Scout leaders are gay as well as 15% of the Scouts.
Same with the Girl Scouts.
Gay people live among us people. God made them too. Jesus cannot "save" them". Wake up.

By: Kelliente on 5/9/13 at 11:07

Asking a minor what they're sexually attracted to as a qualification for enrollment is just SICK. They shouldn't be looking into anyone's sex life, hetero or homo. Period.

By: Ask01 on 5/10/13 at 5:01

Curiously, I was reading an article which brought up information pointing to the possibility Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting movement, may have been gay. Perhaps a repressed, latent homosexual, but one of "them" nonetheless. (Of course, I've always thought those so violently anti gay had some 'latency' issues they repressed, not wanting to deal with the urges.)

Such information would cast a looming shadow over the world wide Scouting Movement and their homophobic stance.

Christ, who they revere so, routinely kept company with the poor and destitute. He regularly mingled with societal pariahs, prostitutes and tax collectors. While not recorded that I recall, (although such information would have almost certainly been left out by church fathers,) I'm sure he would have spread his ministry among the GLBT community.
