Union to focus on economy in protest at Corker's local office

Staff reports

Service Employees International Union Local 205, which represents many of Metro’s public workers, is helping organize a rally and protest outside U.S. Sen. Bob Coker’s Nashville office.

Dubbed “Jobs Not Cuts,” the protest/rally is set for Thursday, Aug. 25, at 5:15 p.m. outside Corker’s 3322 West End Ave. office.

According to an SEIU press release, the demonstration is “part of a growing number of protests against members of congress this month by Americans who are fed up with politicians who side with CEOs and Wall Street bankers over middle class families and have failed to create jobs.”

The release says protests will be aimed at ending tax breaks and loopholes for CEOs, hedge fund managers and others, while calling for corporations to “pay their share of taxes.”

Whatever !!!! Just be happy you still have jobs in the Obama economy

By: govskeptic on 8/24/11 at 5:45

This is certainly a group that needs to be the very last protesting. Times are
tough all over yet they have jobs paid for by struggling taxpayers and their only
interest is in themselves and more importantly their dues sucking enterprise!
Of course, the West End location will give them access to all the other constantly whining academics and left wingers around the universities whether members
or not! While a portion of their arguments may be valid most are just pre-election
posturing!

I can't wait until all government services shut down due to lack of funding from taxpayers. It will be miserable, but it will sure be fun to watch and listen to!

Just wait until the right wing federal budget cuts trickle down to the state, county and city level. “You ain’t seen nothin yet”.

Moonglow1: finally some outrage!! The Republicans and the very rich top 2 % are parasites. Most of them suck money from our federal government. Examples include Halliburton who was paid millions to feed our troops in Iraq. But when it got rough they decided not to deliver on the front lines. These two wars have cost trillions of dollars and cold hard taxpayer cash given to dishonest contractors to enrich Bush, Cheney, and friends. And thank you to President Obama who rid us of paying subsidies (our tax dollars) to Medicare Advantage HMOs whose CEOs make millions. And Bauchmann and others who can't wait for those government farm subsidy checks. Get a grip middle class. You are not being ripped off by government workers who work like everyone else. However you are being so ripped off by our lousy greedy slimy seedy politicians who enrich themselves and their friends by raiding the government including "borrowing" against our social security. Those of you crazy enough to buy into tea party nonsense -dont cry when the $8,000 per year Paul Ryan plan for your health care is enacted while he and lobbyist friends drink their $350 bottles of wine (paid for by taxpayers) and laugh all the way to the bank.

Moonglow1,

You are right on. The Republicans have been crying about the threat of "socialism" for years.

Well, it's been around for YEARS.

Where does HCA make its money? Mainly through the government.

Where does Corrections Corporation of America (the private prison company) make most of its money? Through state and federal contracts (government money).

Where does Haliburtron make its money? The government.

What party to do the CEOs of these companies belong to? The Republican Party.

The private equity companies that buy American companies, send the jobs over seas and quit spending on research and development say they are making the companies more "productive."

What they are doing is cutting costs so they can sell it to the next private equity group.

All these folks are raping our economy.

Like you say, it's all about greed.

Shameful.

Boyer, don't forget to add Jeffrey Immelt of GE, which shut down its X-ray Equipment division and moved those jobs to China... and Lloyd Blankfein, who it was revealed last week, was the recipient of hundreds of billions in secret government loans and who has been excused of financial crimes by the Obama administration. Oh, wait a minute! Those are all cronies of the Obama admin and the Dem-wits. After all, these big businesses know how to keep competition from taking their business and protect them from scrutiny for shipping jobs overseas: pay the Dem-wits big money. And don't forget Warren Buffett, whose Bershire Hathaway has shipped thousands of jobs overseas through its host of subsidiaries like Russell Corp.... and Johnson & Johnson CEO William Weldon and Xerox's Ursula Burns, huge financial contributors to the Obama campaign and whose companies have been the beneficiaries of trade protection legislation. And let's not forget Wells Fargo, Duke Energy and Bank of America who have been shielded from criminal activities by A.G. Eric Holder. Oh, and the 2/3 of Wall Street contributions that have gone to the Democrats in the past four cycles. And so many other BIG corporations (Chase, Comcast, NBC, Starkist, GM, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Harpo Productions, etc.) have been embraced by the Democrats for their contributions. No corruption there... but don't let that keep you from turning that blind eye.

You see, this president has been the best friend to big business of any president in modern times. It's a relationship that helps the big businesses get favorable loopholes at the expense of the small business community... and the middle class. That's right, President Obama despises the US Chamber of Commerce, which represents the single largest group of job creators in this country. The Democrats have been in bed for years with the biggest corporations (where do you think many of them are headquartered?), but the media have fooled the rank-and-file Democrat supporters into thinking that it's the other party. See it's a great arrangement: Big companies can pay for the protection racket that the Democrats provide, and the GOP gets the blame.

No doubt Moonglow also has a big problem with the Obama family who have spent $10 million on vacations in the past year alone. Oh, and by the way... the infamous bottle of wine that Moonglow seized upon was in fact paid for by Mr. Ryan. Just another misinformed Dem-wit... but then it's tough to be so outraged against a group of Americans demanding fiscal responsibility (aka Tea Party)... it's hard to keep those emotions so high when the facts say otherwise.

By: shinestx on 8/25/11 at 6:33

Link on the Obama's profligate spending of taxpayer money on lavish vacations ($10 million just this year!!!): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2029615/Michelle-Obama-accused-spending-10m-public-money-vacations.html

Folks, you won't see this in the leftist, Obama-crony American media. Once again, the Brits show us Yanks how corrupt our media is.

By: shinestx on 8/25/11 at 6:34

And Boyer, you should know which party it was that cut $500 billion out of Medicare... Dem-wits!

Moonglow1: the comments above demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of the tea nut (now the mainstream Republican) agenda. Read all about ALEC which is owned and operated by and for the benefit of multinational corporations whose model legislation has been adopted by the most extreme tea governors including Haslam.

Even the climate change narrative benefits the Koch's and other energy produces by passing legislation for reduced regulation which causes more pollution. The food industry is owned by Monsanto and others who own the seeds. Food prices skyrocketing. Our politicians are paid for and controlled by these business interests.

I am shocked that people believe the Paul Ryan's of the world pay for their own $350 bottles of wine. It your tax money paying. These greedy money sucking parasites are laughing at the stupidity of middle class Americans. Do you really think they care about you. They have you championing tax cuts for the top 2 percent who have outsourced our jobs to China. These top 2 percent can live anywhere in the world. They are global. The point being that they won't create more jobs. It is a grand illusion sold and branded by Fox News and the Murdoch crooks.

The tea nuts want you to watch dumb reality shows, hate government workers, pray the gay away, and pray for your salvation. Well you had better pray really hard because if this tea agenda (the Rick Perry Bauchmann nuts) get elected America as we know it dies.

We notice that you haven't refuted anything with facts. LOL... I love that the leftist extremists now running the Dem-wit party (btw I used to be a Democrat in the Clinton years) are livid about the rise (real grassroots, not astroturf like these unions) of the Tea Party, evidenced by their vulgarity and the likes of such "intelligent" Dem leaders as Maxine Waters, Howard "The Scream" Dean, Frederica Wilson, Harry Reid, Chris Matthews, Rachel Mad-cow, Sgt. Schultz, and Al Sharpton (the newest star on the leftist MSNBC channel). Obviously, you have learned well from them all, as your comments are lifted right from their talking points.

And OMG! Did I call this one about Buffett... before the news broke this morning... http://www.nypost.com/p/pagesix/buffett_obama_pigout_rCcS4YvtrzA10ytZBUDUoM

I'm right, even when I didn't intend to prove how right I am.

Y'all have a great day, and try not to be so angry.

As someone who has lost all faith in our government, I find the party line dedication very interesting. It's like two victims of armed robbery arguing about who's attacker should manage their money, speak on their behalf, educate their children, etc.
