Woman claims daughter sexually assaulted on Metro school bus

An Old Hickory woman is claiming her 12-year-old daughter was sexually battered on a Metro Nashville school bus in August 2009 and that the bus driver failed to stop the attack.

In a lawsuit filed Friday in Davidson County Circuit Court, the woman alleges that as the bus ferried children to their homes one afternoon last fall, a male student picked up the girl by her pants. When her pant leg ripped from hip to knee, the complaint says, the boy reached inside her pants and groped her.

The attack, which was clearly visible from bus driver Jack Whiteman's seat at the wheel, according to the suit, prompted other children on the bus to attempt to intervene. Students told the driver of the assault-in-progress, but Whiteman was impassive, the filing alleges.

Whiteman couldn't be reached for comment, and attorneys for Metro Nashville Government had not reviewed the suit at press time.

The woman's attorney, Wendy Lynne Longmire, declined to comment on the complaint because Metro government had not had time to respond to the allegations.

The suit seeks damages for negligence as well as compensation for the psychiatric care the woman has sought for her daughter.
