YMCA Youth Legislature takes over state capitol

More than 600 high school students from all over Tennessee will gather today at the Tennessee Capitol for the 48th Annual YMCA Youth Legislature.

The future politicians will spend the weekend acting as state senators and representatives, attorneys, lobbyists, justices, cabinet members and members of the press.

The program is designed to give high school students the opportunity to participate in various levels of state government by writing bills and debating political issues in the House and Senate chambers.

Also included in the conference is the National Youth Agenda Forum, which allows students to hear debates on various issues from experts in the field.

Many real-life legislators and activists will help guide the students through the political process.

Sen. Douglas Henry, a longtime supporter of the program, will meet up with his colleague Sen. Joe Haynes to debate the hotly contested state lottery at 10:30 a.m. today.
