Burch: “And a little child shall lead them ...”

By Michael R. Burch

It continues to be a banner year for Tennessee athletes. Congratulations and kudos are in order for the Goodlettsville little leaguers who finished first in the U.S. and second in the world, to the Kitasuna all-star team from Tokyo, Japan.

Goodlettsville has a population of around 16,000 while Tokyo’s is closer to 16 million (including suburbs) so the young Tennesseans had an uphill climb against the best talent from Japan’s largest city, losing 12-2 in the finale.

The American and Japanese players displayed remarkable sportsmanship. In the bottom of the first, Goodlettsville’s Justin Smith hit Rintaro Hirano with a pitch. After Hirano made it to first, Smith walked over to make sure he was OK. When Brock Myers homered off Kotaro Kiyomiya, the pitcher congratulated Myers after he crossed home.

“Tennessee was our best friends in the U.S. division,” Kiyomiya said.

After the game was called due to the little league 10-run rule, in a symbolic gesture of friendship and goodwill, the Japanese players jogged the traditional post-game victory lap carrying the flags of both countries.

There was no need for the Americans to hang their heads or mope, nor did they plan to. “When we get home, it’s going to be a carnival,” Goodlettsville manager Joey Hale said.

The Americans were gracious in defeat, although there were really no losers, only winners. Hale called Japan “the best team in the tournament.” Goodlettsville star Brock Myers said, “We’re the second-best team in the world. That’s pretty good, I guess. I’m all right with that.”

But it’s hard to find such grace in American politics these days. Not only are many American politicians bad winners and worse losers, but they constantly puff up their chests and brag about American “exceptionalism,” which suggests that earth’s other nations are at best second-rate.

Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee is one of the ringleaders and rising stars of a Republican Party that increasingly lacks grace. And yet she praised the GOP’s updated anti-woman, anti-gay, anti-minority, anti-union, anti-anyone-who-isn’t-a-rich-white-Christian-man-in-picture-perfect-health platform. In her speech at the Republican National Convention, Blackburn told the wildly cheering throng that this platform would help the GOP be known as the “Great Opportunity Party.”

Like the RNC’s keynote speaker, Chris Christie, Blackburn referred to the “American Century.” What do Republicans mean when they talk about an “American Century”?

And here are enlightening excerpts from a speech made at the Citadel by the GOP’s new main man, Willard Mitt Romney, in which he evangelizes American exceptionalism.

“I am guided by one overwhelming conviction and passion: This century must be an American Century. In an American Century, America leads the free world and the free world leads the entire world. God did not create this country to be a nation of followers.

I believe we are an exceptional country with a unique destiny and role in the world. America is not destined to be one of several equally balanced global powers. America must lead the world, or someone else will. If we do not have the strength or vision to lead, then other powers will take our place.

The world is dangerous, destructive, chaotic. Like a watchman in the night, we must remain at our post and keep guard of the freedom that defines and ennobles us, and our friends.

The United States will apply the full spectrum of hard and soft power to influence events before they erupt into conflict [i.e., preemptive military strikes and covert operations.]

As president of the United States, I will devote myself to an American Century. And I will never, ever apologize for America.

I pledge to you that if I become commander-in-chief, the United States of America will fulfill its duty, and its destiny.

It is only American power — conceived in the broadest terms — that can provide the foundation of an international system that ensures the security and prosperity of the United States and our friends and allies around the world.”

Words of motivation fall on deaf ears if a country is so splintered internally that national pride, loyalty and enterprise become secondary to unfulfilled personal agendas. I am afraid Romney words are only an empty echo in the minds of Democrats and Republicans.

Not everyone's life has been the rip roaring success they thought it would be.
Maybe it's because of bad decisions made too early in life or the gene pool
didn't fall their way. Those do not apply overall to this great country. It is
"Exceptional", maybe not for our own actions, but for the actions of our
wise beyond their years fore fathers, and the exceptional documents they
left us with to govern by.

The author like this President apparently thinks those items don't matter
and we are on a level par with France, Mexico, Syria, and Kenya. While
neither political party has dominance or any extra points for this hard
fought exceptionalism, there's no reason for it not to be something all
Americans should be proud of. Curse it and anyone proclaiming such
if you will. You have a choice and vote to change it to something much
darker and unknown just as was done in 2008.

God bless the peoples of the world. Good story Mike.

Deaf ears and a blind ignorance as the rest of the world says the silly monk.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 5:24

Good morning, Nashville....it's good to be back home....my summer retreat revitalized the lone one.

Thank you, Mike Burch, for another hard-hitting letter. I agree, too bad that politicians could not be more like those gracious little league players....but the kids are not on the take to the special ]interests, like grown-up politicians are.

I missed the entire GOP Convention...I was incommunicado. Sounds like I missed a nauseating Republican circle jerk.

Bishop Romney's threat to use pre-emptive military power to "influence events" is a not so subtle hint as to what a Bishop Romney Administration would look like....another disastrous Junior Bush- Dick Cheney type of affair.

With Israel-related Holy Wars raging and brewing in the ME and elsewhere, do we really want a Mormon Cleric as our Commander-In-Chief?

If one wishes to expedite Armageddon, then Bishop Romney and the Oscar Mayer Wiener-mobile pilot are the right choice in November.

As for "American Exceptionalism", we are a nation of exceptions....everyone else on the planet has to behave themselves....except for us....everyone ought to admit their mistakes....except for us....everyone has to be fair and honest....except for us.....everyone is must obey international law....except for us....the list of exceptions for America...and for little Israel is a long and growing one.

Mittens gave a good speech.
Sadly, they let that fat slob Gingrich and his hooker wife pre-amble the thing.
Who wants to listen to a thrice married ethics violator, nominee loser talk and reprimand anything?
And Rubio's martyr family, who just had to break the laws and flee Cuba for America, is sickening.
Mr. Blimpie, Christie will explode if he doesn't get on Nutrisystems, like today.
I think they're in need of a new spokesperson since Marino, Bradshaw, and Osmond are all now on a weight gain diet.
Smittens and Lovey are the epitome of "born into wealth" in America.
Then used his connections and American tax loop-holes to further his success.
Now, both at their mid-60's, want us to believe they're in touch with 3/4th of America.
As an aside, look at their faces...all had "work done" and Lasik.
Yeah, just like middle America. Is plastic and cosmetic surgury covered with Foodstamps?

By: Moonglow1 on 8/31/12 at 5:44

Moonglow1: Romney is talking about war. We allocate more money to defense contractors which is why we have no money for the safety net or to invest in basic research or education.

Romney is being "run" by Adelson whose loyalty lies with Israel. He desires war with Iran.

In his speech last night, Romney singled out Putin. Why? More war. Watch out. America is coming for you. Our weapons are primed and ready. Our drones are positioned.

We lead the world forcefully though wars. No longer are we number one in innovation, education, health care, research, or intellectual pursuits. No, we are number one in greed, hatred, and elimination of basic human rights.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 5:53

Excellent post, Moonglow.

You are right Sheldon Adelson, the Jewish, dual-allegiance, casino tycoon, pulls Mitt's strings...Mormons think they are members of the Lost Tribes of Israel...and Mitt is a Mormon cleric...a Bishop. A vote for Bishop Romney is a vote for the militant Likud government of the Jewish state......Oy!

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 6:10

The term "American Century" is not all that new...here is a Wiki entry about PNAC:

The Project for the New American Century (PNAC) was an American think tank based in Washington, D.C. that lasted from 1997 to 2006. It was co-founded as a non-profit educational organization by William Kristol and Robert Kagan. The PNAC's stated goal was "to promote American global leadership."[1] Fundamental to the PNAC were the view that "American leadership is both good for America and good for the world" and support for "a Reaganite policy of military strength and moral clarity."[2] The PNAC exerted influence on high-level U.S. government officials in the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush and affected the Bush Administration's development of military and foreign policies, especially involving national security and the Iraq War.[3][4] (End Snippet)

Willard wants to to return to the neoconic paradigm that guided Bush-Cheney. Again, take a look at who founded PNAC and realize that these influential, dual-allegiance Jews are dragging the US into perpetual Holy War at Israel's behest.

Go ahead, call me an "anti-Semite"...a "Holocaust denier"...."Arab sympathizer"...."terrorist enabler"....etc. I've heard all that AIPAC-generated BS before....I can handle it.

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 6:30

I'm afraid we're going to be in was whether Romney or Obama is in office. The major difference between the two is love for the United States so you have a choice, more jobs for people wanting to work for their living by voting for Romney or putting your heirs deeper into dept into debt by voting for Obama, a man who has shown his hate for the United States. So its a choice, take your pick.

By: treehugger7 on 8/31/12 at 6:34

Glad you are back, Loner. I've missed your comments. Why do we have to do the same crap that Bush-Cheney proved don't work? I must confess I fall asleep during Mitten's speech. I'm probably better for it. I missed the newtser...I can't wait for this sham of an election to be over. Think Ryan will drive the weiner mobile in the inaugural parade?

By: dargent7 on 8/31/12 at 6:35

Ok, so can someone tell me why the RNC hauled out an 82 year old demented actor vs. a two term ex-President GW Bush?
Romney is extolling the virtue of "pre-emptive strikes" and a "rule the world" paradigm and mentality. Yet they distance themselves from the biggest fool when that failed?
Cheney has all the time on his hands to bad mouth Obama, and he couldn't make an appearence? Two architects of the biggest boondoggle, amoral, illegal mess in the Middle East.
Look at the Democrats. They cannot use Bill Clinton, an impeached ex-President, enough. He'll get top billing at the DNC.

By: Kosh III on 8/31/12 at 6:35

Be the global cop+bully; expand the Empire, squander all our resources.
Someone once said:
"No servant can serve two masters at the same time. He will hate one of them and love the other. Or he will be faithful to one and dislike the other. You can't serve God and Money at the same time "

Romney, the Republicans and many other politicians and "leaders" have chosen to embrace the root of evil which is the love of money.
Now we truly see the party of "values."

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 7:00

Thank you, treehugger7....the Republican Party is illustrating Einstein's definition of insanity - they are repeating the same failed behavior over and over again, expecting a different outcome each time. One might conclude that Mr. Adelson has addled their brains....in my opinion, too much money corrupts a person's powers of reason, as well as their souls.

As for VP Ryan driving the Wiener-mobile in the Inaugural parade, that is one fantasy that I do not wish to see actualized....it would be altogether right, just and fitting....but after the laughing stopped, the weeping and gnashing of teeth would be overpowering.

FDR promised a chicken in every pot...Ryan would put a wiener in every bun.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 7:02

Good point, Darge, Junior Bush and Dick Cheney are persona non grata in the GOP...but Willard wants to emulate their foreign policy disasters.....go figure.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 7:09

I agree, Kosh....one cannot serve two masters....would Bishop Romney serve the United States or the Jewish State?

What's good for the Jewish State is seldom truly good for the USA, in spite of what the Israel lobby claims. The US major media are all owned and operated by resolute pro-Israel people.....the Zionists. Just ask Helen Thomas.

In my humble opinion: The American Founders would freak out to see a US Presidential candidate wearing a yarmulke at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, in order to secure campaign financing.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 7:19

Let us not forget that Paul Ryan went to college on the taxpayer's dime....a Social Security Survivor Benefits recipient....now, he would dismantle the safety net that he personally benefited from...this is typical Republican Hypocrisy.

And Willard dodged the draft during the Vietnam War...he ran off to France, on a Mormon Mission...now the Mormon Cleric would be the Commander In Chief of US armed forces? Again, high hypocrisy

Darth Evader and the Wiener-mobile Pilot.....that's the best that the party of Lincoln can do? The Republic is in dire straits.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 7:45

Trying out the refreshed synapses....a little extemporaneous songwriting, for my friends in Nashville, TN....Music City:

The Party of High Hypocrisy

The party of high hypocrisy,
The party of Christian theocracy,
Sadly, his may come as news to some,
But that's what the party of Lincoln's become.

The party that once fought to free the slaves,
Now delivers what the supremacists crave.
All that talk about us versus them,
Americans are the crème de la crème.

Talk about "American Exceptionalism",
Another euphemism...red, white & blue prism.
We don't do Empire well....oh no.
America is going to hell....oh yeah.

Now the party of high hypocrisy,
Has revealed to world, for all to see,
Their choice for the US Presidency:
A Mormon Bishop with magic BVD's.

Any feedback?

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 7:48

OOOPS! Should have read: "Has revealed to the world, for all to see"...pardon my clumsiness with English articles....and my typing skills have gone to hell this summer...mea culpa.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 7:52

Another typo: First stanza, 3d line...s/h/b.... "Sadly, this may come as news to some,"

It's a rough draft...very rough.

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 8:14

I agree with you Loner, you can't serve two masters. Will Soro continue to be Barry's sole master?

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 8:20

Looks like we all stayed awake last night listening to Mitt. I left our the last "s" in George's name. I give Barry my humblest apology. I didn't mean to misspell his master's name.

By: Ummm... on 8/31/12 at 8:30

Good lyrics, Loner. I must admit, however, that there's been no political-themed song since "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" by Country Joe and the Fish that has grabbed me the way that it did during the Vietnam era. Are you familiar with that tune?

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 8:41

BHO spent 752 million in other people's money, in order to win the 2008 election.....he has 752 masters, not just one.....and with Adelson's Super PAC pumping in tens of millions into Bishop Romney's campaign, neither candidate can claim to be independent of greedy and demanding special interests.

Both major parties are completely on the take. Super PACs are adding a whole new dimension to the fraud. The major media are blessing the whole thing.....Joe Six-Pack just wants his cable TV.

Politics are of little interest to millions of Americans...you can't really blame them....the flawed Electoral College system....Gerrymandering of the Districts.....special interest bribery...a complacent media....a docile clergy.....these are the ingredients for a fascist take-over of our representative democracy....our republic is in grave danger of catastrophic failure at the pinnacles of power.

We, The People, have lost control.....and it seems that few have noticed...and few seem to care about it.....and then there are those armed, Judeo-Christian, white supremacists across the fruited plain....those nut-jobs do seem to care about it ...and that is a frightening idea.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 8:44

Yes, I remember Country Joe and the Fish...enjoy!

By: Captain Nemo on 8/31/12 at 8:46

Hello Loner!! It is not the same CP where you
are gone

By: Captain Nemo on 8/31/12 at 8:48

Some people go to war. yogi goes to was.

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 8:59

Politics is one of the crookedest lines of work in this nation, Loner. Honest people are few and far between in politics. It's a power hungry ailment. Once in office, kiss anybody's a$$ to stay in office until you retire.

Why would anyone spend millions to pay to campaign for a job that only paid $144,500 per year on a two year term?

There should be restrictions on where your campaign money could come from from the House to the Presidency.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 9:00

Thank you, Captain, for the kind words...I'm sure that some posters are not so happy about my return. ...Yogi spelled "wars" phonetically....using the American Southern dialect.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 9:07

McCain-Feingold was supposed to clean up the mess...it backfired...it turned out to be McCain's found gold....again, the party of high hypocrisy found an exception to their own rules.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/31/12 at 9:09

Your welcome Loner. It was a yogified dialect spoken by mutant trolls.

It is time for me to get back on the road. I'll let you know when I get close to Gordonsville yogi.

By: pswindle on 8/31/12 at 10:36

The boys of Goodlettsville is what TN should be about. They brought grace back to the great state of TN. After watching the GOP Convention, I am totally convinced that we would be a danger if this man Mitt is elected. Mitt almost said that we would go to war because he has promised the nut in Isreal that we would go.

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 11:03

You may as well e ready for war whether it's Romney or Barry in office. Why do you think Barry has not visited Israel but he has visited the Arab nations bowing to their kings and had that talk with the Russian President asking for their "space" on missile defense until after the election? War between Israel and the Arab nations is inevitable.

Romney might back Israel but Obama will help destroy Israel. Take your pick.

By: Moonglow1 on 8/31/12 at 11:09

Moonglow1: Glad you are back Loner. You, Ummm, Tree, gdiafante, and a few others neutralize the ignorance of the Teas that post here.

Voter ID is a huge problem in the "Great State of TN". Daron Hall, the Sheriff was handed a repub ballot. In TN you must "declare" dem or tea nut. He declared Dem, was given a repub\tea ballot because a "system" glitch.

We know the only way Romney and that snot nosed adolescent brown nose idiot running mate Ryan can win is through voter fraud.

Check out the posts yesterday. Yogi was his usual self followed by someone name Ear Nose something...Way Tea out there.

Won't the old people freak when they find out Ryan's goal is to kill Medicare (starve it) so that all people 55 and older will be forced into the Voucher Care Plan. People are too dumb to realize the Teas plan to give away tax funded health care dollars to managed care insurance companies whose sole goal is to make a profit. Those over 65 will eventually need to purchase vouchers too because there will be no revenue to continue. Why-off shore tax havens for Romney and others like him.

Why the tough talk on China. Adelson ownes casinos in Macou where the mainland Chinese come to gamble. I don't know all the details, but by devaluating the yuan, Adelson will make even more money. Probably the tough talk about Putin has to do with giving The Koch's Russian oil.

Oh yes, those teas have got your back. More like stab you in the back.

Once the teas privatize the govt, then the real fun begins.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 11:28

Thanks for the pat on the back, Moonglow..just keeping the faith.

I agree with Pswindle, the boys from Geedlettsville should reflect a newer and classier image of TN....screw the coonskin cap, in TN, they put on a ball cap and play ball....like champions...modest in victory...gracious in defeat....that's what TN should be all about....can't we all agree on that?

May that spirit of genuine graciousness pervade the Volunteer State....it could have a healing effect.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 11:30

Oh my. another typo...I meant Goodlettsville...please, graciously pardon my errors.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 11:34

Again the troll bears fasle witness:

As a candidate, Obama performed the necessary rituals at the Wailing Wall. All POTUS candidates are functionally required to do so. Anyone who bitches is a Jew-hater....got it?

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 11:36

Is it my imagination, or has the NCP cleaned up the site so that after we post, there's no need to fish around for the current page....our posts pop up marked as "NEW"....that's nice.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 11:37

Yep...it's true...the glitch is gone! That's great...thanks a million, NCP.

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 11:43

That's okay Loner, we all make mistakes. Except a few, of course.

And excuse me Moonglow1, I thought Barry Soetoro was trying to privatize government. If not, why has he taken over private industries and give them to his supporters? You know, the unions involved.

Unless you're a co-communist with him, you had better wake up.

How about comparing what he has done good for the country and what he has done that's bad for the country. Let's start with jobs.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 11:48

The glitch is still there on the Up for Debate board.

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 11:51

You're right, Loner. He went when he was running for election. He hasn't been back since. He might if he thought it would get him the votes but he probably won't because of his attitude toward Israel..

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 11:54

Yogi, admit your mistake....Obama has put on the yarmulke and prayed at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem....you foolishly wrote: "Why do you think Barry has not visited Israel but he has visited the Arab nations bowing to their kings...?"

Yogi, give it a rest....we all know your game....you are a sore loser...a white supremacist and a gullible glutton for right-wing crazy talk....you have zero credibility here....most folks simply ignore your rantings and ravings....that's what I usually do....but I just had to call you out on that big lie.

Now, admit your mistake, like a man....then, please go away.

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 11:55

OK...the troll admits his error....now begone, troll!

By: Loner on 8/31/12 at 11:59

I gotta roll, kids....see ya later!

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 12:19

Get it right, Loner. I said he went before his election; when he was running. And like I've said, he's the best damned actor and liar I've ever seen on TV. He stood before that wall like a Jew stands there.

Loner, I don't know where you've been, but if you would do a little research on Obama you would know what he is. He's a Muslim and he's a communist. He will say and do anything he can to keep that office.

And it still boils down to my argument, why does he refuse to prove he is who he says he is?

He was raised as a Muslim and raised as a communist. What made him change and when did he change?

Unlike you and your cohorts on this site, I hope I'm wrong for the safety of our nation. 67 days and its Katie bar the door.

And just wondering: How may of you will admit you were wrong when he proves you are?

By: bfra on 8/31/12 at 12:23

yogi - You have been proved WRONG on every issue you preach 24/7 & haven't admitted it yet! Go slop the hogs or molest the goats!

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 1:35

When have I been proven wrong? I haven't. You and your fellow posters have only said what you think. You apparently think if you believe it, it's a fact. Prove me wrong and I'll admit it. You can't, but you just keep yapping what you think. Thinking isn't knowledge, bfra.

Hell, listen to what Obama has to say. Read the books he has issued. Was he lying when he said he was a Muslim? Was he lying when he said he was a communist? Was he lying when he told he was raised in childhood in communist and Muslim families?

If he was, why is re refusing to prove he is legally eligible for that office?

Prove me wrong by facts, not just your saying it.

You had better wake up before it's too late.

By: bfra on 8/31/12 at 2:15

Yogi - Yada, yada, yada! Old man get someone to read all the factual sites that have been put on this board, proving you wrong on everything you post. EVERYTHING! Nobody has the time or reason to keep proving you wrong, just because you don't have the mentality to read, or the common sense to search "FACTS" yourself.

By: yogiman on 8/31/12 at 2:36

You can say what you wish, bfra. I've only been going by what Barry said. Was he wrong?

And I'll repeat: All you've done is SAY, not offer any proof. You can say you're just "breaking wind" when you're actually fa*ting loud (and I don't mean fasting).

Question: Did you hear about Obama going to a shop in Wisconsin and commenting about the State Flag they had on the wall as their union flag and telling them it was great to have a union in that shop since 1848? Can you imagine what he thought when that employee told him that was their State Flag that was founded in 1848 and they were a non-union shop?

I'm sure you can understand why the White House media said he skipped Wisconsin and just went to Minn and Chicago on that "visit". And I'm sure you understand why the media did not put that in their news. It was only broadcast by a radio station in Milwaukee.

Funny, ain't it?
