Up for Debate: Asiana to sue TV station

Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 1:05am

Asiana Airlines has said it would sue the NTSB (though it appeared to later back off from suing NTSB) and the TV station that aired false and offensive names reported to be those of the pilots in the recent plane crash at the San Francisco airport? What organization do you think should be held responsible and what should be done to prevent such an incident in the future?

While having heard of this law suit, I've never read the full story on it. The U.S.
Television media has for the last many years concentrated as much on
entertainment as actual worthy news. What is purported to be truthful facts
involving individual citizens should not be distorted or tossed about extremely
loosely, especially without any corroboration. True and long, if not ever lasting,
harm can be done to the lives of those affected by false or manipulated reports.

Even in countries with much stricter laws concerning just these type incidents
it happens often. This in spite of the fact that judgments are often rendered
against the offending media. Such judgments are very rare here, so it becomes
safer and more profitable to continue or even increase the number of incidents.

I agree, govskeptic.

All of the local TV channels claim to be the preferred one with the news they're about to show. Then about half way through their newscast they refer you to the "news" they're going to tell you at the 10 o'clock news.

I usually watch Channel 2 at 6PM. Channel 4 at 6:30PM and Channel 5 at 10PM to see if any of them has anything different to tell us about (report on).

It seems that this all started with the NTSB giving out false names. I not sure who or why this was done in the first place, but I believe that the TV stations realized the error and promptly made an apology shortly after.

By: bfra on 7/16/13 at 7:07

They make mistakes because they are trying to be the "FIRST" with the news and don't take time to verify their information. Make them responsible for what they report, if false, hit them where it hurts the most, their income.

By: BenDover on 7/16/13 at 7:33

Pretty dark humor in light of the tragedy. Whoever did this at the NTSB should be fired.

The TV station did nuting wong.

By: budlight on 7/16/13 at 7:35

What offensive names were given out? I missed that story.

An intern at the NTSB did it as a joke.

I thought it was funny, shame on the media for not questioning obvious bogus names.

By: Captain Nemo on 7/16/13 at 8:01

The TV station did nuting wong. LOL BEN!

By: yogiman on 7/16/13 at 8:06

Lo and behold, bfra,

We actually agree on something. They should pay until their pockets are empty.

By: yogiman on 7/16/13 at 8:09

And, dumba$$,

When you reach the stage of making no errors, you can make a joke of anyone making one. But until you become perfect in writing a sentence, you should keep your dumb mouth shut.

By: bfra on 7/16/13 at 8:21

Nemo - I thought Ben's wording fit his MO to a tee! LOL

By: gdiafante on 7/16/13 at 8:28

The TV station did nothing wrong? Right...it's perfectly normal to report anything given to you without reading it first...right, Ron Burgundy?

By: BenDover on 7/16/13 at 8:33

Well when the source is a release from the NTSB who the heck to do you call, gd? It's not like there's another competitive resource out there to the government.

By: bfra on 7/16/13 at 8:38

If anybody had carefully read the names, they should have suspected something was wrong & ask for some verification.

By: budlight on 7/16/13 at 8:39

By: Libertine on 7/16/13 at 8:49
An intern at the NTSB did it as a joke.

An intern who should never get a good reference for a job - ever! That is so racist and insensitive. NTSB needs an overhaul and some diversity training immediately.

By the way, the Zimmerman jury did consider manslaughter and murder. What a waste of tax dollars to have tried Zimmerman just because of some media hogs (jackson, sharpton) and a bunch of out of control looters. These people are trashing businesses and making fools of themselves to say the least.

By: gdiafante on 7/16/13 at 8:41

You look over the material and then if you have two functioning brain cells you realize the names are bogus and act accordingly. I can't believe we're even having this discussion.

By: PKVol on 7/16/13 at 8:41

The reported names:

Captain Sum Ting Wong
Wi Tu Lo
Ho Lee Fuk
Bang Ding Ow

The attorney for Asiana is Sue D. Witeman

By: MamaG on 7/16/13 at 8:51

gdia, at least she commented on what she knows best: racism and insensitivity.

By: BenDover on 7/16/13 at 8:52

You couldn't have made that mistake gd? Hell sometimes I forget to make the turn into my neighborhood in the afternoons.

By: MamaG on 7/16/13 at 8:52

I also thought it was kind of funny--at least the names were pretty funny--not the actuality of it being said on-air.

By: gdiafante on 7/16/13 at 8:58

That doesn't surprise me at all Ben. Yeah, I'm sure I would have made that mistake. Then, I would have thrown it over to weather with Mike Hunt and sports with IP Freeley.

There are gatekeepers (plural) that are supposed to have reviewed the information, it was a massive failure in so many ways. I would even bet that the intern probably had the same reaction as everyone else...they actually put that on the air??

I agree that the media shouldn't be left off the hook for this. As one of the characters on the John Boy and Billy Show used to say, "act like you got some sense....."

By: brrrrk on 7/16/13 at 9:03

And in a brief return to yesterdays topic....

Here is the definition of irony....

"There are factions, there are groups, there are people that would want to take the law into their own hands as they perceive it, or be vigilante's in some sense" - Robert Zimmerman.

By: BenDover on 7/16/13 at 9:20

I think the only reason you want the private media to take it on the chin is because otherwise the blame falls on government.

The pecking orders is:
1.Government
2.liberal sympathetic media
3.everyone else
4.liberal critical media
5.Oil companies.

By: BenDover on 7/16/13 at 9:21

Was this a Fox affiliate?

By: gdiafante on 7/16/13 at 9:23

It's called responsibility, Ben, politics has nothing to do with it (though you always seem to find a way to interject it into any story). Read the next sentence very slowly...

It never should have made it on air.

It's not that difficult to understand.

Sorry, B2.
Our minds apparently differ. Yours being brilliantly ignorant and mine be stupidly brilliant.

Yes Comrade yogi you have a Brilliantly Stupid mind.

Step 2) Open mouth

Obviously someone at the station missed step 1....

To answer your question Ben, yes it is.

Actually those types of ethnic jokes are considered offensive and racist. Why would you call that "kind of funny"?

If George Bush had said those names or if he said what you said about "it was kind of funny", you libs would be hanging him out to dry.

Double standards? Yep.

By: Captain Nemo on 7/16/13 at 9:56

Ben in your 10:20 post you left out Fox Bias Reporting for the wrong conclusions.

By: MamaG on 7/16/13 at 10:02

budlight, aka sidney, you constantly put down hispanics and others. You talk about your president like he is a leper. I merely thought the names sounded funny. Not that it was funny that they were making fun of others. You are such a twit and I don't expect you to understand me. Go scratch.

By: Captain Nemo on 7/16/13 at 10:02

Government waste post, "If George Bush had said those names or if he said what you said about "it was kind of funny", you libs would be hanging him out to dry."

I did see were anyone here making excuse for this blunder, but then I don't have your hate for people as you do, bud.

Once again Ben is demonstrating his ability to be disingenuous. He knows damned well that if anyone with a lick of common sense would have read those names, they would have known immediately that something was off kilter.

By: BenDover on 7/16/13 at 10:12

So it is a Fox affiliate. I was wondering where the pile-on was coming from.

Classic double standard. Call it the Alec Baldwin rule.

Of course, Ben and the right are the victims here...

I don't know if you noticed Ben, but the majority of my comments about using common sense came before Cap posted the fact that it was a Fox affiliate... I had no idea.

By: Captain Nemo on 7/16/13 at 10:19

What pile-on Ben?

By: Captain Nemo on 7/16/13 at 10:22

I never thought anything about until you ask, Ben. But if you want to make something of it, then lets have at it.

By: Captain Nemo on 7/16/13 at 10:27

The news anchor woman seemed genuinely upset at the mistake and seemed to have been hurt by her report. I don’t think there was any wrong doing on KTVU part.

By: pswindle on 7/16/13 at 10:45

Just reported what you knew. Early reports of any mishap is usually wrong. I guess the airlines needed money from some other source since it was declared pilot error.

By: gdiafante on 7/16/13 at 11:13

Who cares what the network affiliation is? The point is that the station blew it, despite what the great ankle-grabber states.

Wrong! I do not put down hispanics. I do not approve of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. You have never seen or heard me say anything about legal immigration that is a put down. I applaud those people who pay their dues, stand in line, are honest and treat our country and our country's borders and boundaries with respect.

BUT thieves in the night who sneak into or break into the country, admit I don't like 'em.

AND Obama is not a leper; a leper would need love, sympathy and prayers. Obama is a know it all who is running our country into the ground. I am not alone in those thoughts.

Oh, I understand you alright blanket. It's that you don't have an understanding of what a racist remark is and those names were racist. But you go 'head and laugh your little ole' pea pickin' heart out . . . ya hear, now! I'm sure you and your friends think it's amusing.

But then you aren't Chinese, are you? I guess you think they are OK to laugh at? But the whole event was tragic.

Have a nice day, anyway.

By: govskeptic on 7/16/13 at 12:27

As I have read the story: The TV Station had the right names and phoned the
NTSB for verification. The call was answered at NTSB by an "intern", who
verified the info as it had been given to him by the TV station. It gets rather
funny here as the Captain's real name and spelling is: Lee-Kang-Kuk-and
as translated by the station to "Wi Tu Lo" both veribally and spelling across
the screen.

The point of being mad however, is not the names but the Pilots Union
over the NTSB releasing so much info so early showing how poorly the
Captain and pilot crew reacted right after the crash and exposing how badly
that attempt at landing had been. Don't think you can collect over bad publicity
that was all true.

By: bfra on 7/16/13 at 12:37

bud - That's lice & bedbugs you got from under the bridge! Take a bath!

By: gdiafante on 7/16/13 at 12:49

They did not have the real names.

"The names were presented, by the station, to the intern for confirmation," NTSB spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said. "The intern did not make up the names and provide them to the station."

http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/15/travel/asiana-offensive-names/index.html

So someone at the station made up the names, had someone call and confirm the names, then presented the names for air. And no one in this chain thought that something off...either that station has the dumbest people in the world working there or...

No, I'll just say that.
