Up for Debate: Behind the children

Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 11:20pm

Gov. Bill Haslam feels Congress might not be ready to modify the federal No Child Left Behind law. If it does not, the governor anticipates a significant number of Tennessee schools being classified as failing. As such, the state is considering asking the Obama administration to waive some of the No Child Left Behind requirements for Tennessee’s schools. Why or why not would you support such a move?

Tennessee schools classified as failing? Who cares?
This state cares much more about carrying loaded hand guns into bars and parks, meth labs, and voting for Republican administrations who obssess with illegal, foreign wars.

By: budlight on 7/7/11 at 6:49

I do not believe standards should be lowered to meet a federal guideline. I would like to see the education community buckle down and do some tough love in the teaching category. Find the stop 20 schools in America and then emulate them. Put higher standards in place. Children, especially, will rise to the level of expectation if we just show them how and let them know exactly what the expectations are.

D7, obsessions are everywhere, aren't they?

By: yogiman on 7/7/11 at 6:50

The federal government should never have intruded in the education of the children to begin with. Children aren't equal in education nor any other for of life.. I think its pretty obvious, over this site.

All men are not created equal in common nature.. Only the people in a communist government society are considered equal.

I think the lack of ethical education today shows it is evident.

By: serr8d on 7/7/11 at 6:59

Much of the problem with our schools is because our society fails to force 'multicultured' 'immigrants' to properly assimilate. We must take these kids in who do not adequately speak the language; that slows down the entire system, and causes entire schools to fail.

The loony Left in our society, evidenced by that dargent7 thinger just above...

"This state cares much more about carrying loaded hand guns into bars and parks, meth labs, and voting for Republican administrations who obssess with illegal, foreign wars."

S/he would have this nation CHANGE to suit an ideology that would have to include magikal happenings: money would magikally grow on trees; foreign-culture children would magikally speak English; no one would make a dime more than anyone else; and everyone's outcome would be exactly the same, since everyone looks just.like.him. (or her).

Leftys love America; just not the way it is today, or ever was in the past.

By: Funditto on 7/7/11 at 7:11

That's such crap Serr. Are you or were your great-grandparents native Americans? My irish ancestors were scorned just like the mexicans today.
And was the past so great really? The dogs attacking black kids and 10 year olds dropping out to work in factories and on farms?
So were Italians and the Asians who populated the magnet schools. It starts at home with parents who give a rip. Not parents who want a bigger house, more money and hired help and have to work 50 hours a week to get it.
Greed continues to ruin this country and always will.

By: Kosh III on 7/7/11 at 7:11

Certainly not the way it was in the past: racist, imperialist, warm-mongering, gernocidal, Jim Crow-ist.

But maybe you approve of wars of aggression intended to murder innocents and steal their land; e.g. Cherokee, Kumeyaay, Mexico, Canada, Hawai'i etc etc
It would fit the personality of disdain and despite you portray on here.

By: gdiafante on 7/7/11 at 7:13

Yes, immigrants not assimilating are making little Johnny illiterate. He's so distracted by his parents bigotry towards immigrants that he can't focus on his studies and he surely doesn't get any help from them.

He'll grow up and be a TN legislator.

By: dargent7 on 7/7/11 at 7:17

Serr8: And, you righties, aka the GOP, who comprise 80% of the Red State of Tennessee, would rather fight 4 wars overseas than rebuild our shcools and highways.
Had McCain, who I'm quite sure you voted for, became President in '08, with that dittz Palin who wanted to bomb Russia, we'd be ear lobe deep in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, N. Korea.
Under GOP control, you bet American children would be left behind.

I actually agree with Bud though. The answer isn't lowering standards so the state can get funds. There has to be a point where we hold teachers, students and parents accountable for the education in this country.

By: dargent7 on 7/7/11 at 7:32

gD: America holds a priority waging wars over education.
How many people do you know who never went to college, much less graduated?
And how many of those voted for GW Bush? There's a close connection.

Moonglow1: No Child Left Behind was passed during the Bush administration. I understand that under the guidelines teachers must teach children to pass tests only. It does nothing to encourage critical thinking. Of course that would mimic Bush himself. I am surprised Haslam is asking for a waiver. Based on his actions he seems to favor busting anything public and handing it over to private interests (charter schools) because we all know these non performing highly paid CEOs can do a better job than the poor downtrodden demonized public employee. Notice how great former Nashville resident and CEO of HCA and major screw up is doing since he purchased the governorship of Florida. He is at the lowest rating of any current governor: 22 percent think he is doing well. And Haslam former CEO is following the ALEC template for passing legislation. Can't think for himself. What about Pawlenty who really messed up the previously well run state of MN.

Bottom line: forget No Child Left Behind. Instead Leave all Tea Republican's Behind. Vote Them Out.

The schools have been running below average for years! Is a little concern too
much for many of you to handle, or is it best to continue the passing of the

IsIt2008yet:

"My irish ancestors were scorned just like the mexicans today."

Your Irish ancestors spoke the language, and eventually became assimilated into our 'blended' society. The Hispanics we see today, coming in illegally, make no attempt to assimilate; they desire to keep their own language and cultures intact.

You speak of the Asian children as being ahead of typical Americans. Of course! Does Japan seem 'multicultured' to ruin, as America is? People living in Japan are so much unlike Americans - in a good way - because immigrants are assimilated to HOME culture, as America should require. But in a good way; by enforcing existing immigration laws.

And you LeftLibProggs who can't get over the way America was founded, and the way she's structured, should get up and leave. We are sick of your belly-aching; let the door hit you on the ass on your way to Cuba, China or Venezuela, where you will find socialist dictators much to your liking.

By: gdiafante on 7/7/11 at 8:28

1st generation immigrants rarely learn English, you're thinking of subsequent generations.

And you LeftLibProggs who can't get over the way America was founded, and the way she's structured, should get up and leave.

Says the troll who's complaining about how America should be structured...lol

gdonut:

"Yes, immigrants not assimilating are making little Johnny illiterate. He's so distracted by his parents bigotry towards immigrants that he can't focus on his studies and he surely doesn't get any help from them. "

You are but a troll. If you can, teach children. Get off your gigantic arse and help out; volunteer to teach an immigrant child (and his parents) our language. You know what? I'll bet you find that few of the 'immigrants' desire to learn anything about our nation, except information as to where they can get things given to them for free.

Illegal immigrants are simply undocumented Democrats, Dirty Socialists who expect others to provide for their needs, from birth to death; from dusk to dawn.

By: gdiafante on 7/7/11 at 8:33

You're responses are so intellectually lazy they don't warrant a reply, serr8d. If I wanted to listen to a parrot, I'd buy one.

By: serr8d on 7/7/11 at 8:34

America was structured by our Constitution, amended as needed over the centuries. But there's many Leftists who seek to abandon that document ("it's too old!" or "they didn't have computers or AIDS or cars or planes!") and rewrite it to their neo-social desires. Admit it; you'd all like to see the Constitution changed to make your lives and socialist desires fulfilled.

If you don't like it, and your little prezzidint-man wants to CHANGE it instead of protecting it (as he's sworn to do), then it's time for another shellacking. IS IT 2012 YET?

By: serr8d on 7/7/11 at 8:36

gdonut, you've but one note, and it's perpetually sour. You post to and for your own little cadre of LeftLibProggs; to me, you are but a gigantic ass.

By: BigPapa on 7/7/11 at 8:44

You can trace the decline of the US school test scores directly back to desegregation. I know it's (to borrow a phrase) and inconvieiance truth, but facts is facts.
Schools that have mostly white suburban kids are fine, it's the schools in the ghetto that bring everyone down. Most pulbic school teachers come from the same state colleges, so it's not the teachers. They just can't make chicken salad outta chicken $hit.

By: gdiafante on 7/7/11 at 8:54

Again, serr8d, keep your fetishes to yourself.

By: bfra on 7/7/11 at 8:54

serr8d - Illegal immigrants are simply undocumented Democrats, Dirty Socialists who expect others to provide for their needs, from birth to death; from dusk to dawn.
===========================================================

Delete the Democrats part and this is a true statement. Illegals are not D, R or anything politically. If they could vote, they would vote for whoever will offer more freebies, regardless of which party.

No, Kosh, he meant Katie Couric!! LOL He's in love with the girl!

And when is this country (especially the left) going to wake up and figure out which part of "illegal immigrants" doesn't sound right? If a person is going to break one law, they will break many more without even batting an eyelid. If you sneak into my home, there is a high probability you are going to rob me, or even worse kill me. Let's stop enabling the illegal immigration. It's like letting an alcoholic run a liquor store. It's usually disasterous!

By: numenlumen on 7/7/11 at 9:28

dargent's right. We Southerners don't really give a flying F about education, though we dutifully pay lip service to it. But I suspect this attitude extends far beyond the South, even to enlightened places such as Michigan, maybe even to New England.

We Americans are a terribly optimistic and idealistic people. Consequently we're patsies for the Progressive (read Roosevelt, Wilson, LaFolette, Dewey, und so weiter) utopian dreams of programs like NCLB. Unfortunately, such programs designed to perfect our natures and our society have a track record of failure. Personally, I think it's time to admit NCLB is just another noble gesture that has failed and end it. And do these schools REALLY need the federal government's money with its attached fetters?

One poster here recommends looking at the top schools and emulating them. That, unfortunately, would likely involve replacing the raw materials, not making silk purses out of the heaps of sows' ears our schools have now.

PS: dargent, I miss your irreverent comments on The Tennessean's site. They're often fresh enough to be worth reading.

By: BigPapa on 7/7/11 at 10:14

The road to h#ll is paved with good intentions. The US government comes out with all these programs: War on Poverty, the War on Drugs, NCLB, they all fail because the government cant do anything it's really up to the individual. Heck let's just make a law against being sad, or having a bad day while we're at it.

The best thing a government can do is get out of the way and not inhibit people from accessing the system (womens movement, civil rights movement). BUT once those legal road blocks are removed, it's up the individual to take advantage of that situation.

If Republicans are so outraged by the redistribution of wealth, why do they feel so deserving of federal money for schools? Here's a novel idea: how about all these cancervative red states start paying for schools THEMSELVES? Their money, their financial stake. Repeat after me: bailouts are bad, m'kay? After all, it's not like we get more federal money than we contribute...oh wait, nevermind.

Many years ago, there were at least 37 different languages being spoken at Antioch H.S. and the teachers told us it was making it nearly impossible to teach them the basics. If the child cannot read/write English sufficiently, then you're already at a disadvantage.

As I've pointed out before, "Red" states consistently receive more funding in Federal dollars than they pay in Federal taxes. THEY are the true welfare states.

You are correct Girlie! And I had one student tell me that it was very difficult to concentrate with someone teaching in English and then someone having to translate it to spanish or some other language all at the same time.

English is the fundamental working language of this country. All immigrants must learn it BEFORE they are enrolled in school with English speaking students. It just makes good common sense.

After all, WHY did they come here? To my knowledge it is to get AWAY from their country. And isn't it strange how they want to re-establish that same country right here in the middle of the USA? Seems confused to me. If you love freedom, then it's America. If you love America, then it's English. If you love people and love to communicate, then "when in Rome, do as the Romans' do" (learn and speak the language).

If I move to China, you better believe they would want me to learn their language.

Roadkill?

By: bfra on 7/7/11 at 1:20

brrrrk & revo: CA has grits, chess pie & greens. Roadkill, you can get that anywhere, if that's what your taste buds call for. Now, in some of the northern states, you can't get biscuits & corn bread like we have, because their flour & cornmeal are processed a different way. LOL

By: bfra on 7/7/11 at 1:47

Immigrants that are responsible parents, would make it an issue for their children to speak English before they start to school, so that would be able to take advantage of getting a good education. Of course, illegals don't care, because you don't have to speak English to take advantage of all the freebies offered by our Government. Plus, if they work for cash, they don't have to pay taxes to support these freebies.

Would I stop eating grits, or greens or chess pie? I don't eat chess pie! It's too unhealthy. BUT no I would not stop eating what I love to eat. However, I would not move to California and try to force my life-style and heredity down their throats.

I was born in CA, but have no desire to live there. I loved going to Mexico and I loved the South American Culture. A south American nurse was responsible for my name because she knew my mother very well. So I have a deeper history with the south american culture that you probably do, brrrrrk.

Having said that, my love for them and their culture (or any other culture) does not mean I want it stuffed down my throat or the throat of my country. If I moved to Mexico, I would not try to make Mexico into America. Get my drift swift?

Oh, Bud, give it a rest. You were born in El Cahon, which isn't really San Diego. It's 5 blocks from Chula Vista. 1 out of 10 speaks English or is naturalized.
Then you grew up in La Jolla, which is prettier than Greece, Paris, Madrid, Malibu, and even Detroit.
Yet, you hated it.......for Nashville?
La Jolla for Nashville?
Lucky for you, 99% of this board has never been to La Jolla.
Be careful who's ass' s you blow smoke up with your posts.

By: bfra on 7/7/11 at 3:19

d7 - bud is really blowing it on the bus. in homes thread. Claims Metro told her, there are 10,000 bus. operating out of homes. So does that mean Metro is issuing bus. license to people breaking the law? LOL

But then, with the likes of Torrence, maybe so!

bfra: When I lived in San Diego, it was Del Mar.
Del Mar is one of the coolest placest to live on the planet.

La Jolla was too touristy and shoppy.
But, unbelievable walks along the shore from North to South.
I bet a million "Bud" was never there.

Before we start turning out legions of rocket surgeons, if we could just keep the children on welfare and out of prison would be a reasonable start.
