Up for Debate: Corporate tax breaks

Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 1:23am

Do you approve of Mayor Karl Dean's use of corporate tax breaks to spur development in Metro? Or would developments such as those planned by HCA as well as Gaylord and Dollywood have happened on their own?

Thanks, Ben, for at least acknowledging the fact that these huge mulch-national corporations do manipulate the figures to produce the lowest possible net profit, for tax evasion purposes....Exxon is no exception to the rule.

As Mark Twain is reputed to have said, "Figures don't lie, but liars figure"....(note: some say that Carroll D. Wright, a govt. statistician, used the phrase in 1889....and that Twain may not have coined the phrase.)

Moving right along... will Bill Belichek be wearing a ''Hoodie'' on the sideline this fall?

By: BenDover on 4/3/12 at 10:18

Obama lights cigars with trillion dollar bills loner. Bush's deficits ran roughly equivalent to the war supplementals (this despite 9/11, the 2000 recession, the dot.com bubble burst, the World Comn and Enron collapse and several unprecedented natural disasters). Obama's deficits are $1,000,000,000,000+ over that trend line every year even with the war costs winding down. Plus he blew the half trillion in TARP repayments the banks have paid back with interest.

It's Chicago machine politics on steroids my friend and the best you guys can do is say, "Bush sucked worse!" ?

I think the snow park idea is pretty lame but I'm a big Dolly fan anyway.

By: gdiafante on 4/3/12 at 10:19

I don't think anyone can compare the economic climate in 2000 or 2001 with 2008-9. That's ridiculous.

By: slacker on 4/3/12 at 10:19

Loner.. brrrrk is the resident Twain expert. He''ll clear it up.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 10:21

Ben talks about Junior Bush having "broad shoulders" that carried this nation and Iraq through a crisis...Junior Bush as a regular Atlas...trouble is, Junior shrugged.

Iraq is now a Sunni dominated theocracy and the civilian death toll seems to rise every month...the bombings are still going on....and the million and a half Iraqi refugees are slow to return to the powder keg of hate that they once called home. The Sunni and Shiite are at each others throats like never before.

With no real air-defense in place in Iraq, the Israeli Air Force can now violate Iraqi airspace safely....the shortest route from J'lem to Tehran is by way of Iraqi airspace.

Mission accomplished?

By: slacker on 4/3/12 at 10:23

Who coined the phrase: ''if we don't give 'em tax breaks another city will?

By: BenDover on 4/3/12 at 10:24

Loner, they make the rules and the companies play by them. The best thing the US could do would be to drop the corporate rate to 25% and it would repatriate hundreds of billions of dollars a year from taxes on revenues that international corporations are realizing in other countries with more favorable tax laws than the US.

By: BigPapa on 4/3/12 at 10:28

The reasons Nashville can't attract those companies have been hashed and re-hashed.
In short the outlaying counties are smarter, whiter, and wealthier, Nashville is dumber, darker, and poorer.

You chose which best suites your company. Be it a hotel needing cleaning help or a corporate HQ.

Just because Nashville doesnt have the population to fit a manufacturing plant doesn't mean they should not try to attract the jobs they (we) can get.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 10:31

Well, Obama is a big disappointment to many on the port side....Peace Prize my @ss!

And he's still clamping down on the medical Cannabis industry...actually stepping up the raids recently...Hope & Change my @ss!

And Obama spent over 750 million dollars to get elected...other people's money, of course....now he also needs a Super-PAC to keep pace with the Republicans? Campaign finance reform my @ss!

I'll vote for Ron Paul, if he goes with the Libertarian Party...RP needs to defecate or get off the pot....as they say....Paul could shake up the calculus...he could draw more votes that Ross Perot did....Paul's views reflect the area where the left and right agree...perhaps for differing motives...but common ground has been found in Ron Paul's proposals and views....Run, Ron, Run!

By: BenDover on 4/3/12 at 10:32

I think if we'd put the TARP repayments back against the deficit, proceeded on pretty much the same spending course, and had projected consistency rather than uncertainty with respect to what future employees will cost the employers; I think we'd have been in at least as good of shape as we are now without the additional $4,500,000,000,000 in deficits booked so far; and without the taxpayer obligations for the expanded bureaucracy and entitlements as on-going deficits for our grandchildren to pay.

Mea culpa on my typos this morning...still recovering from the Novocaine...I'm too lazy to point them out...youse guys know what I meant.....right?

In short the cure is the cause and the economy is recovering despite this administration's efforts not because of them.

Who coined the phrase: ''if we don't give 'em tax breaks another city will?

I believe Mayor Daley Senior, of Windy City renown, said that, back in the sixties, Slack...as his cops were cracking the skulls of antiwar demonstrators....tax breaks...breaking skulls....dat's Chicago....dat and duh Bears.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 10:44

The Slack is back.....

Undercover police strip-search specialist sashays into a gay piano bar.....

Ben, shockingly, is not happy the economy is improving. But, according to your argument, what is the implication of an economy that prospers when being manipulated by a Marxist, Communist dicator? Does that mean Capitalism is a failure?

Inquiring minds want to know.

By: BenDover on 4/3/12 at 10:47

... wearing nothing but a smile...

By: gdiafante on 4/3/12 at 10:49

Papa, that's a naive interpretation. You assume that only Davidson County residents would be employable. I suppose you've never heard of commuting?

Ben sez: "In spite of, not because of."

How typical of the die-hard Bushites...I went to Google translator....I turned the oft-used phrase into profound-sounding Latin...just for you, Ben...this would look good on a T-shirt with BHO's likeness?

Here it is:

Etsi non propter.

Those Romans knew how to say a lot with a few letters....no frills...no filler...no bull.

By: gdiafante on 4/3/12 at 10:52

By the way, I believe the economy is improving despite Obama and Congress too, just not to the extent that you do.

By: slacker on 4/3/12 at 10:52

Guy walks into a bar.. tells the bartender ''give me a break on my drinks and I'll build a stool here.''

By: gdiafante on 4/3/12 at 10:54

The bartender replies, "American stool? Because we don't want no stinking foreigner stools..."

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 10:55

Sounds like a loose stool, Slack....Darge has probably been similarly propositioned....he has tended a few bars.

By: BenDover on 4/3/12 at 10:57

I agree gd... that Pelosi, Reid thing was one nasty combination birthed back in '06 and when you added Obama to it... whew... that's one foul non-value-added credit-card-wielding left-wing orgy right there... it's amazing we survived.

By: slacker on 4/3/12 at 11:00

True Loner.. but I believe Darge refuses to serve a ''Dirty Sanchez'' hence more unemployment. He should sign with the Slackeradoes.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 11:01

So...Daron "Strip Search" Hall, the private prisons advocate and lawman, wants to run for TN Governor? You poor devils...from theocracy to perversion in high places.

Governor Hall will get the crack out of Tennessee, one crack at a time..."Bend over, if you're not hiding anything, you have nothing to fear...now bend over!"

Maybe they'll check out the prostates on the suspects while they are digging around in there? Another fine reason for strip searches!

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 11:05

With the USSC decision regarding the policeman's right to strip search anyone, for anything now the law of the land....latex glove sales should spike...invest now and cash in.

By: slacker on 4/3/12 at 11:07

Loner, Hall might be eying the Mayor position. Dean is probably thinking Governor, or Senator.
If Dean is elected Gov., we''ll have bike trails out the ying..yang.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 11:08

Do the Slackerados need a sax & tin whistle player? Already got the full beard...don't need the Dirty Sanchez...thank you.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 11:12

Daron "Strip Search" Hall for Mayor of Music City? Not a good fit, methinks...he'd be better suited to be Mayor of Fire Island or San Francisco? I understand they drop their pants willingly there.....all the hairy genitalia and sphincters that a lawman could ask for...Hall would be in paradise there.

By: slacker on 4/3/12 at 11:15

Loner the tin whistle player indicates a high IQ. The whistle player probably played flute instead of tuba in his high school marching band. Sadly.. you're much to talented for the lowly Slackerados.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 11:22

Uhhhh....you ain't heard me yet, Slack....I'm no Boots Randolph...or a Celtic Whistle Gnome. I was too puny for the tuba, Slack...barely fit for the tenor sax in HS....the tin whistle does not require a high volume of wind, it does require a fair amount of concentration and attention to fine motors skills....so if youse need a mechanic....I got motor skills....as for "concentration".....see: Kamp Loner.

By: slacker on 4/3/12 at 11:27

Yeah.. the poor fat guy always got stuck with the tuba or bass drum in the high school marching band. But it does prepare them for the hosing they'll get in later life.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 11:32

Slack the Bard of Avon said it best: "Tuba. Or not tuba. That is the question."

Then there's this:

Ok, there's NO WAY Shell, Exxon/ Mobil, BP, Chevron are making "0.20 cents a gallon profit" on gasoline at the pump.
At $3.90 a gallon?
If so, their R & D Depts. are making $2.00 profit a gallon for everyone sold. Why else get into the business? Humanitarian reasons I'm unaware of?
Their drilling operations.
Their off-shore platform construction and drilling.
Their exploratory committees.
Their lobbyists.
Halliburton never lost a dime in their oil exploration and overseas operations.
Including two wars orchestrated by Dracula Cheney for MORE OIL.
If the profit isn't to be made in the refined oil, called gas, there's a shit-load to be made in aquiring it. The Earth has it, we all need it, these cos. get it, and then sell it, and we use it. Voraciously.

Future Music City Headline: Hugh Jass, Obese Tuba-player, Arrested & Strip Searched - Crack Found.

By: Kosh III on 4/3/12 at 11:36

Why are avowed conservatives not outraged over the SC decision to abolish the 4th Amendment? I just looked at the website for 3 leaders(Drughbaugh, Beck and Oreilly) plus Fox news; it's not even mentioned.

This was a treasonous decision and is a giant right-wing-approved step towards Fascism.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 11:39

Kosh...you mean the 5-4 decision on the right for police to strip search anyone for any reason? Or was there another drive-by assault on the Fourth?

By: Rasputin72 on 4/3/12 at 11:44

I wonder how many people who post on this board if given a taxbreak could not take advantage of it because they pay little or no taxes? I say this because it is my belief that only those who want "free stuff" and earn very little money support Barack Hussein Obama. If I had a poor work ethic and were lacking in mental capacity I would certainly vote for Barack Hussein Obama.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 11:47

If there is poetic justice, karma or such, then Clarence Thomas will get pulled over while incognito...dressed in old jeans and a hoodie and driving his "gone fishin' pick-up truck"....the cops pull him over for a tail light out...when asked for ID, he notices that he forgot his wallet....Clarence tells the white racist cops that he's "Clarence Thomas, Supreme Court Justice"...they laugh and mock him out with..." Yeah, and I'm the King of Siam....N*ggah!" etc. They take him in and strip search him and video the whole thing...anal probe...the whole humiliating thing....the video gets leaked to You-tube and goes viral.

Yeah, that would be righteous, just and fitting...IMHO.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 11:51

The Rasp continues with his schtick...plays the role of Scrooge...loathes the poor....throws the "Hussein" middle name in for texture and color...Hah, Hah...stop...my ribs!...rolling on the government carpet here.

By: slacker on 4/3/12 at 12:01

News alert.... The Tennessee senate has unanimously passed the saggy pants law.

By: slacker on 4/3/12 at 12:03

Plumbers union irate.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 12:07

FYI, Rasp, I am retired...but still pay a sh*t-load of taxes...in spite of that, I'm not ready to elect a draft-dodging cult leader and arrogant tycoon as US President and Commander-In-Chief of our armed forces...nobody in the Romney family has served in uniform in generations....Mitt's dad and his kids never served...and Mitt took a powder to "Gay Pairee" during the Vietnam War...he was on the required LDS Mission...back in the old days when blacks were excluded from the Mormon Church....Mitt is another spoiled scion, like Junior Bush....we don't need another financial crash like in 2008 or any more holy wars....Mitt would probably bring about both....quickly.

Obama will be re-elected...unless Netanyahu hits the Persians and US gasoline doubles in price overnight. But I'll vote RP, if he's on the ballot...I'll be able to hold my head high after the election is over....at my age, that means a lot. Sometimes, compromise sucks.

By: Loner on 4/3/12 at 12:13

Slack...they vowed to get the crack out of Tennessee...the Tea Baggers are doing what they said they'd do....and, as you pointed out, what about those law-abiding plumbers and Maytag repairmen? Will violators get strip-searched? Invest in latex gloves!

By: brrrrk on 4/3/12 at 12:14

Ummm... said

"Local tax breaks to attract industrial development (i.e.- JOBS) are pretty easy to justify."

No they're not. If you look at the statistics regarding tax breaks versus benefits (jobs, increased tax base, etc...), the benefits rarely offset, let alone surpass, the tax breaks. And quite often when the business leaves, the tax payers are left holding the bag with whatever white elephant the business leaves behind.... for example, a large building that becomes a liability (both financially and physically) to the community. In addition, most of those businesses that are lured here (and away from other communities, I might add) are just as easily lured to some other location at the drop of a hat. Any business that can be lured here can just as easily be lured to somewhere else. Walmart is a prefect example of this. The United States of Wal-Mart by John Dicker documents this quite well.
