Up for Debate: Councilman takes to tweeting

Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 2:06am

What do you think of Councilman Josh Stites' comments on Twitter regarding the chamber? Is it OK for a councilman to air such thoughts that way? Is he right or wrong?

Loner, TN does enjoy lower taxes in general. But that doesn't stop everyone from whining. They don't want to pay any...ever.

But, they'll accept Federal money without question, and then look puzzled when someone points out the hypocrisy.

Oh that part. LOL

By: Loner on 5/17/12 at 7:13

I agree, Darge, I hope that BHO gets re-elected, just so the right-wingnuts will go berserkers....but seriously, knowing what we now know about the Secret Service... I'd say that Obama will have to double his guard...enemies both foreign and domestic are running out of patience with the man....they hate his guts.

Speaking of "targeted killings" and "extra-judicial killings", the Iranians hanged a convicted Israeli agent, apparently a local traitor, for his role in the killing of an Iranian scientist...the old motorcycle bomb trick....the dude confessed, of course, confessions can be extracted quite easily these days...Gitmo-style....a bit of water-boarding usually gets the desired result...Dick Cheney swears by it.

The Mossad has the "extra-judicial killing" thing down to a science...an art, perhaps....if Netanyahu thinks that Obama is going to be re-elected, anything can happen....the Israelis have enough friends in the Congress and the media to get away with it. The US Evangelicals would forgive them, even if the ugly facts came to light.

80% of this board has fled. Disbanded. Because of a one, Paul Wade.
aka, "yogi".
He reminds me of a Grand Imperial Wizard of the KKK.
They think they know. But, they know shit.
Just plain crazy. Dangerous people, walking among us.

Wow d7, you and Yogi have the same first name. Did your mom name you after him? Nice.

Loner, Nashville having tax rates lower than other cities is a good thing. Its something that most Nashvillian's want to keep in effect. Recent transplants to Nashville, have your take on it. They say ''you should see the tax rate where I came from.'' Our leaders hired 50 police officers using funds from a federal grant they knew would expire, and now they cry layoffs without a tax increase. Give tax breaks to millionaire speculators. Re-finance the city debt, in an election year. Continue the drama of how they've struggled choosing what to cut. These things piss off taxpayers on fixed incomes. Austerity in a recession is also a good thing.

By: Loner on 5/17/12 at 7:37

No state income tax...and dirt cheap property taxes....that's a nice state of affairs, Gd...and you claim that Washington, DC subsidizes the easy ride? And these Tea-baggers want to secede?

By: gdiafante on 5/17/12 at 7:55

You'd be surprised, Loner. Unbeknownst to most TN is that the governor is moving around some state agencies that get Federal funding...not to make them more efficient or save money, but to get more of the funding for themselves.

There's your less government idiots.

I made the point before loner that I'm only looking at about another $600 or so a year here so I can't really understand the fuss about it when no one cares that Obama is racking up around $15,000 a year per family in additional debt burden.

By: dargent7 on 5/17/12 at 8:09

The point: Everyone, 50%, has been piling on Obama since he took the oath of office on Jan. 20, 2009.
This is after 8 years of Bush & Lon Cheney.
Two useless, illegal wars in tow.
Obama is as smart as it gets. No one's smarter.
Romney? A rich kid from Bloomfield Hills, Cranbrook, etc.
And I know. I grew up 2 miles from the place. I know what it is to be born into "privilege".
Romney's a fake, a phoney, a fraud, a liar.
But, in America, he may very well win.

By: gdiafante on 5/17/12 at 8:18

So, what you're saying, Ben, is that the debt burden for families has gone up during an unprecedented economic collapse.

My only response is...duh.

I find it particularly ironic how the party that perfected deficit spending is now crying foul. I say, give them a pacifier and let the grown ups deal with it.

By: Rasputin72 on 5/17/12 at 8:23

Dargent7.........Romney has absolutely no chance of winning in November. There are just too many people who want the same things Romney and I have. The way they want to get it is not through the lucky sperm club and financial expertise but to take from us through taxation.

Democracy is always fluid and churning. Right now the birth rate is tilted towards those who should not be having children. I think this will continue for another 20 to 25 years. By that time the United States will be a country that none of us recognize. Not the underclass, not the remaining middle class or the upper class.

I will probably be in a nice polished granite private masoleum having an inscription which states. "He believed in the law of self-preservation and practiced it every day of his life."

By: gdiafante on 5/17/12 at 8:29

"He believed in the law of self-preservation and practiced it every day of his life."

So you're into self-embalming?

By: BenDover on 5/17/12 at 8:30

Bush's deficits were the war supplementals gd. Wars entered into with a substantial consensus of both parties, I'll remind you... so the question at that point is do you finish the job or abandon them to certain Chaos and Civil war. Bush did the only right thing. (which Obama rightly continued after no longer having the luxury of criticism at a distance at his disposal anymore).

Obama's deficits are 4 times what Bush's were and are on-going for all the foreseeable future. It's because of a flawed Keynesian philosophy that doesn't match with real-word experience because there's never any immediate political will to pay down the deficits run up during the down-turns; and the negative pressures of uncertainty, coming tax burden, and the delicate balance of keeping your creditors in a lending mood more than offsets any economic benefit of throwing bundles of hundreds at your favored political cronies and voting constituencies.

Willard Romney is no Millard Fillmore.

LOL, Gd & Slack..."self-preservation".....the ultimate do-it-yourself project......"Auto-Embalming" Cut out the middleman and save thousands!

What have you got Raspy, besides a stinky rented limo?

By: gdiafante on 5/17/12 at 8:43

yada yada yada, Ben. Get an MP3 to replace your broken record.

Or would someone at least give him a tissue?

By: Loner on 5/17/12 at 8:43

One would think that somebody in the Grey Poupon league, like the Rasp, wouldn't try to save a few bucks on their "final expenses"....guess that's how those tycoons got so rich in the first place....they keep their wads tight.

By: slacker on 5/17/12 at 8:46

I'm betting Rasp has an electrode in his neck, he can go on forever.

By: BenDover on 5/17/12 at 8:47

You should do a Walt Disney Rasp... you might wake up, like a neurotic Jew, in a few hundred years to a whole new world.

By: slacker on 5/17/12 at 8:49

Rasp.. if you start turning green, its time to take the Limo to the mausoleum.

By: slacker on 5/17/12 at 8:50

Ben, Rasp should be frozen with a full staff of servants, just in case. Its only right.

By: slacker on 5/17/12 at 8:51

The underclass getting cheeky with Rasp again.

By: BenDover on 5/17/12 at 8:56

And his cat...

Just don't contract it out to the Soylent Corporation Raspy... those guys are a little sketchy.

By: slacker on 5/17/12 at 8:58

Yeah.. I think they have Ted Williams head.

By: Loner on 5/17/12 at 9:06

Let's do a Fact Check:

Ben Dover wrote: "Bush's deficits were the war supplementals gd. Wars entered into with a substantial consensus of both parties..."

I Googled that and found this:

On the Iraq War Resolution vote, here are the facts:

United States House of Representatives:
Party Ayes Nays PRES No Vote
Republican 215 6 0 2
Democratic 82 126 0 1
Independent 0 1 0 0
TOTALS 297 133 0 3

United States Senate:
Party Ayes Nays No Vote
Republican 48 1 0
Democratic 29 21 0
Independent 0 1 0
TOTALS 77 23 0

Those figures indicate that the "substantial consensus" certainly existed in the Republican Party....it was nearly unanimous in the GOP fold...only 6 GOP Reps voted "no" and a single, brave GOP Senator voted "no".

Among the Democrats, 126 Reps said, "no", just 82 went along with the GOP agenda. In the Senate, the Dems caved in and went with a 29 vs 21 yes/no vote.

Those who voted to invade were rewarded by AIPAC and its donor networks... the Energy lobby and the Defense lobby also took notes on how these jokers all voted......those few who balked paid the price.

By: Loner on 5/17/12 at 9:09

I went ahead and lined up the columns, but all for nothing....I think the charts are still readable, however.

By: Loner on 5/17/12 at 9:12

OK...it's time....."Grey Poupon-stained tycoon struts into a gay piano bar...."

By: gdiafante on 5/17/12 at 9:29

I've also heard that he's changing the pronunciation of his name to "Boofay"...which is French...who just elected a known Communist...just saying...

By: Loner on 5/17/12 at 9:30

What?! No Grey Poupon in that recipe?

Duck Fart....Sounds like something the non-productive class would imbibe....BTW, what does a duck fart sound like?

I Googled it:

It's mercifully short and quick....just like the cocktail....duck's gotta do what a duck's gotta do.

"Loner, TN does enjoy lower taxes in general. But that doesn't stop everyone from whining. They don't want to pay any...ever.

But, they'll accept Federal money without question, and then look puzzled when someone points out the hypocrisy."

Yes, isn't it interesting how conveniently the right ignores the fact that most red states (you know, the ones that are supposed to be fiscally responsible) routinely balance their budgets using Federal funds?

By: brrrrk on 5/17/12 at 9:35

That Duck Fart sounds good..... pun intended. But that Bailey's®, that's some sneaky shit! That's the kind of stuff you can sit and drink all night and not realize you've been had till you go to get up. :-)

By: BenDover on 5/17/12 at 9:36

I didn't realize there were that many out-liers in the house, Loner, with all of the leadership of the Democratic party pushing it so hard. It's kinda like when Nancy lets Jim Cooper vote conservative when she doesn't need his vote, I guess.

By: gdiafante on 5/17/12 at 9:36

Someone is getting those federal funds, brrrrk, and it's not the departments that need them. And if a TN politician is rambling on about cutting spending, what they really mean is to increase the net federal funding.

By: Loner on 5/17/12 at 9:37

We pay those US states tribute, so they won't rebel again, Brrrrk....it's cheaper in the long run....and a lot less bloody.

Kinda like the case in which we pay Egypt and Jordan, so they won't attack Israel...it's called "tribute", it's the old protection racket.....we pay to keep the bad guys from wrecking the place.

BHO just signed the papers with Pres. Karzai, guaranteeing the Afghan government billions in US aid for decades to come.

We paid off the insurgents in Iraq and now we are exporting US cash to that place...we used to boycott Iraq, now we subsidize it....go figure.

By: slacker on 5/17/12 at 9:45

brrrrk, do you think that Mayor Dean could get some more federal grant money, to pay those 50 police officers he hired with temporary federal funds?

By: BenDover on 5/17/12 at 9:47

It's the natural effect of a typically lower cost of living in places with conservative voters. If you've got a lower cost of living then you have far fewer people in the more punitive tax brackets. We're able to control our own houses but get out-voted by the urbanites who insist on the fiscal liberalism ideal. Then retirees compound it by seeking lower cost of living without the shackles of employment.

As for accepting federal monies; there's no hypocrisy in that. We've made the case for lower taxes and lower spending and lost. If high taxes and high spending are the playing field, do we simply pay up and then cede it all the spending to the left? That's absurd.

By: dargent7 on 5/17/12 at 9:51

What? No comments about Mary Kennedy hanging herself at 52?
Leaving behind 4 kids.
We want to talk and negotiate with "yogi"?

By: gdiafante on 5/17/12 at 9:51

It's hypocritical when you want less government but so willingly accept and redistribute federal money, Ben. Though I'm not surprised you can't see this.

By: gdiafante on 5/17/12 at 9:54

For someone who supposedly wants personal responsibility, you sure do pass the buck, Ben. I'm beginning to think the emperor has no clothes...you're just a well-spoken yogi.

By: Loner on 5/17/12 at 10:05

Ben expects the "left" to accede to all right-wing funding requests...now he claims the opposite to be true....he claims it's the "left" who are promoting the "high taxes & high spending" agenda.

Truth is, the Republicans support and defend the "low taxes & high spending" model.

The Democrats are a little more honest about it; if you want government benefits, you gotta collect enough revenue in taxes to pay for them....that's fiscal honesty, Ben.

If this re[public is to ever get out of debt...and that is an enormous "if", we will do it by way of a prolonged period of "high taxes & low spending". They call that an "austerity budget"....it won't fly in Greece and it won't fly here in the USA.....we are on the path to fiscal insolvency as a nation, yet we are supposedly the richest people on earth....how can this be?

The US dollar is buoyed up because the EU is wobbling at this time...and the Chinese have cash to loan.....this creates an illusion of solvency and prosperity. This cannot last forever.

If war breaks out in the ME and fuel prices soar...the sputtering recovery may stall out completely....the end could be sooner, not later.

By: BenDover on 5/17/12 at 10:30

Four guys decide to go in together and buy a pizza. One if the guys comes up with an idea that they should pay for it in proportion to their relative wealth. The math works out like this ($3, $3, $3, $15).

The guy who has substantially more wealth than the others disagrees and says, 'screw this dudes... ' and walks out. Then the others get together with like minded 'fairness' people, form a government, and pass a law that says the cost of a Pizza is always shared based on wealth. When the rich guy balks, their new government puts a gun to his head and forces him to ante up the $15 bucks.

Then when he goes to grab a slice of the pizza they all scream "HYPOCRITE" and run him away without ANY pizza for what he has contributed.

Loner, the French just elected a commie to get rid of the new austerity program.
The frogs love entitlements. Merkel will end up sending the Wehrmacht in, to slap the Frenchies around. Or maybe dust off those stored guilliotines
