What does it mean when a city such as Detroit goes bankrupt? How should the federal government get involved, if at all? What lessons can be learned?

'How about all those communities and businesses around the country who are ethically managing their pension funds with some fiscal responsibility? That's right.... we never hear about those, do we....'

Nope, because that isn't news. Allegedly the pension funds in TN are 95% funded. Cities and States will really strong unions are the ones in trouble.

"The Illinois system, for example, is projected to run out of money in 2018, while pension systems in Connecticut, Indiana and New Jersey are projected to run out of money in 2019.

In Tennessee, though, the outlook is somewhat sunnier, with Rauh's study projecting that the Volunteer State's pension system would not run out of money until 2035. "

I'm still trying to figure out how "union" put politicians in office. I thought all this time it was voters.

"The SEIU spent $60 million to help elect Obama, according to the union. Stern says the group deployed 100,000 volunteers during the campaign, including 3,000 who worked on the election full-time, and made 15 million phone calls."

Libertine - So a union backed a politician? That doesn't mean they put any politician in office. Show how each member of any particular union voted. I am not union & I helped put a lot of politicians in office by voting for them. Even your figures show that unions were not sole reasons of election outcomes.

Libertine,

You also left out the fact that Tennessee (along with most other right to work states) has some of the lowest wages (highest poverty) in the country, along with some of the worst education outcomes, and some of the highest numbers of under-insured, has become the meth capital of the nation, and that within the last 30 years has consistently received more in Federal funding than they've paid in Federal taxes. Tennessee is the definition of a welfare state...

You like to point out the bad things about other states.... so be honest about Tennessee.

Hey, I would pick Nashville over Detroit anytime.

How many politicians do you think have been elected to the Chicago or Detroit city council without union backing?

Do you think Barack Obama would have won the election without union backing?

Libertine - Unless you are some kind of seer, NOT, you don't know the answers to your own questions.

Libertine - Do you ever use yogi, bud, ben, raspy or jug for another screen name?

Libertine, how about Memphis?

By: Libertine on 7/22/13 at 3:11

I think that the folks who run Memphis have a lot in common with the folks who ran Detroit in the ground. I expect a similar outcome.

Between the two, guess Memphis is the lesser of two evils.

"Do you think Barack Obama would have won the election without union backing?"

Do you think Romney would have won without the backing of the NRA? Wait..... Romney got all the backing from the mighty NRA and STILL lost.... :-)

Unions are much more influential in states with more electoral college votes.

pswindle" I agree with your 12:08 posting that the government should step in and
fire the Michigan Governor and put Gov Haslam in charge of straightening
out Detroit's finances and any other of their problems.

Being born and raised in Detroit.....the auto industry didn't 'go bust".
The Japanese ate our lunch.
Better/ superior quality cars. Better gas milage.
My God, Toyota came out with the Prius hybrid 7 years ago at $25,000. and 60 mpg.
Chevy comes out with the Volt last year at $45,000.
GM shut down Pontiac. All their cars are duplicates. But, so are Toyotas.
The Camry is exactly the same as the Avalon. How can they do something American car guys can't? "Fit and finish, customer service, and the freekin' thing doesn't fall apart once you leave the car lot.
That Kuame mayor didn't help things with 4,000 sexual texts...Coleman Young was an idiot when I grew up.
Dave Bing is very cool.
But, $18. billion in debt is too much...I think the next worse city in America was only $4. billion.
Watch Michael Moore's "Roger & Me" from 20 years ago....Flint MI is a shit hole, as is Pontiac and half the metro cities. If you're not from Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills, Orchard Lake...forget it.
John DeLorean was too cool with the GTO, but greed got him humg.

Before I go...The Tigers DID win the World Series in '68 and '84.
I was there for both games. I think the Lions went 0-16 last year. Detroit is always a joke
BenD.: Dearborn, MI ( Ford Mtr.) has the highest Muslim population in the world outside the Middle East.
After 9/11, not ONE march, showing solidarity, or support for America from these people.
They own ALL the liquor/ cigarette stores, check cashing places on every street corner. Just suck the money out of the indigent.
All designed to make profit but, to take advantage, to kill the American spirit and soul.

Unions buy the votes; the advertising and the promises are made by the big bucks.

By: bfra on 7/22/13 at 6:05

Is that how you make decisions, bud? Go with the big bucks! I have a brain & use it, so my votes are not bought, they are my own decisions.
