Up for Debate: Discrimination in 'reality' shows

Friday, April 20, 2012 at 12:48am

Do the plaintiffs in the federal complaint filed against ABC raise a good point? Are "people of color" poorly represented on "reality" television programs and should those programs be expected to adjust accordingly?

Why is it OK for a black person to yell discrimination when they aren't chosen for a role, but if a white person yelled discrimination because they weren't chosen for that role, they would be laughed at? Why, then, can't everyone yell discrimination as the reason they weren't chosen for an acting role?

And let's face it, every acting role specifies the race needed for that role.

Discrimination is a personal matter. It has nothing to do with business.

Good morning, Nashville.

Questions of the day: Do the plaintiffs in the federal complaint filed against ABC raise a good point? Are "people of color" poorly represented on "reality" television programs and should those programs be expected to adjust accordingly?

Of all the frivolous lawsuits ever proposed, this one has to be one of the most frivolous ever. This is beyond frivolous...it is ridiculous. ABC should be allowed to decide on what programming it wants to invest its time energy and money into and ABC should be allowed to decide what it wishes not to invest in. It's just that simple.

The lawyer(s) representing the grandstanding plaintiffs should be disbarred for wasting the court's time.

Loner = You are right, it is just another frivolous law suit and should be thrown out. The would be offended must think the only requirement for talent is to be black.

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 4:35

Happy 4-20 folks! We are here for a good tome....not a long time.

Morning, Bfra.

If more lawyers were reprimanded or disbarred for wasting the court's time with ludicrous lawsuits like this one, we might see the break up of the logjam in the courts. As it is, there is no disincentive to bring stupid lawsuits like this one.

These two gold-digging plaintiffs have three lawyers working their case for them...hey, it beats working for a living, I suppose.

If ABC caves and pays these jerks anything at all, it will send a bad signal out there to the legal "profession".....what's next...a toothless, bald-headed sexagenarian suing ABC because he did not make the cut as the "Bachelor"?

How many quadriplegics have been given a lead role, or any role on the show? The quads should sue?

How many Orthodox Jewish rabbis have been given the bachelor role? They should sue too.

Same goes for Islamic jihadists.....how many fundamentalist Muslims have been on the show....again, another lawsuit?

How many openly gay men were the bachelor, being sought by openly gay men? Same for the lesbians, trannies and bisexuals...should these folks sue ABC too?

And folks with Downs syndrome....how many of those people have been given any role on the show?

No dwarfs have been given a significant role in the show...how come?

And the Australian Aborigines.....they ought to sue too....where are the wedlock-seeking Australian Aborigines, ABC? You prejudiced b@stards.

But seriously, ABC has plenty of shows starring black folks...those mindless black sitcoms with the annoying laugh tracks..... and their sports programming is top-heavy with black ex-jocks. ABC is certainly not prejudiced against people of color...the allegation is completely without merit.

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 4:48

...and the 98-lb. weaklings....I forgot about them....where are the puny, pale-faced geeks?

...and the fat tubs-o-lard...where is ABC's concern for the unwed tubs-o-lard? Again, I see a class-action lawsuit here....ker-ching!

Maybe we should just file a class action on the part of all of us ugly people....ABC is prejudiced against ugly people!

By: dargent7 on 4/20/12 at 4:56

The Kardashians should all be sued and jailed for fraud.
Those people are so in love with themselves it's repugnant.
Bruce Jenner should get a garden hose and attach it his car's exhaust pipe and his mouth, asap.
Unless your black, under 6'11" tall, and in the NBA, the 3 girls want nothing to do with you.
Try watching more than 5 minutes of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" ( Atlanta, New Jersey) without vomiting.
"People of Color" are lucky network tv. doesn't invade their space!

By: govskeptic on 4/20/12 at 5:14

Yes, it should be opened to all African-American's over 50 who have no
arrest records and that are gainfully employed.

By: Rasputin72 on 4/20/12 at 5:31

Our government saw as far back as 1954 that the birthrate of blacks was so high that discrimination could no longer be tolerated. Many many blacks have used the non-discrimination laws to merge into the euro-american culture. Unfortunately many more have chosen to keep the culture that was comfortable for them. This will always be a problem between the races.

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 5:34

I do not watch reality shows much...they seem anything but real...I mean who gives a shit? Of course, I'm a loner, so my tastes and preferences are not usually in line with the herd's.

Obviously, tens of millions of Americans have no life of their own, so they compensate by vicariously living with famous people, through these "reality" shows. I think that the nation has too much time on its hands....this is part of the circus in "bread & circus".

Glued to the tube or fixated to the flat screen.....people spend significant portions of their lives watching TV....it placates the masses....distracts them from keeping an eye on their leaders.....keeps us from dwelling on our mortality and our "problems"....if there ever was an opiate of the masses, it is commercial TV.

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 5:36

So, Rasp, the coloreds are breeding like rats or what?

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 5:49

I do not watch the Bachelor show...but I flip through the channels...it appears that white bachelors & white bachelorettes are being "courted" by people of color on the show; if ABC was a racist outfit, they would not promote interracial dating like this would they?

The racism charge against ABC is pure BS....some enterprising lawyers are trying to pick some deep pockets here...frivolous, gold-digging, grand-standing law suits like this one make the legal profession look sleazier than usual....hopefully, a judge will throw this out quickly and reprimand the lawyers for bringing the suit....but, if the judge is a reality-show-loving, black guy, who agrees with these two Nashville football players, then ABC may have its pockets picked by pros.

By: dargent7 on 4/20/12 at 5:49

So, "blacks" infiltrate and merge?
And what do "whites" do? Just breed?
The Bush clan? Daddy and sonny boy starting two ground wars in Iraq because Saddam didn't "play ball"? Killing 100's of thousands.
Romney's 5 little son's of bitches who didn't enlist in the military?
Bernie Madoff who stole people's life savings to the tune of $60 billion?
Enron's CEO Ken Lay who stole the entire cos. pensions, 401k's?
Who needs a "reality" tv show for entertainment when American reality is this screwed up.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 5:52

I don’t know if this is frivolous or not, but I don’t think I have ever seen anybody other than a white person on the shows. Then I again I don’t watch.

By: Rasputin72 on 4/19/12 at 11:34
Captain Nemo......It would appear that you have built a belief about the ineptitude of the eleven confederate states based upon what you would LIKE to believe. What I believe and obviously it is a moot point other than the discussion between you and I is that cotton, slaves and military might would be the strength of the Confederacy. Remember that the North had the industrial factories and the South had the Generals.
The Confederacy would probably be the Israel of today back in its time. I don't think Military takeover would be an issue.

Rasputin72-
I remember that the Confederacy lost and went home with their tails between their legs.

Gee another revisionist.

nimrod,
When, and under what law, did a Kenyan become eligible to become president of the USA?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Now the drool troll is saying that Obama was born in Kenya. He is such a desperate little racist that he has now placed Obama’s birth in Africa. Another way in which this bigoted to say that the president is a n***er, with out actually having to say it.

yogi wishes for the good old days when he could call blacks anything he wanted.

"I mean who gives a shit? "

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 6:07

Yeah, the supporters of the CSA and the supporters of the Jewish state do seem to share core values.

The Confederacy was based upon race-based supremacy...the Jewish state is based upon that too....the Confederates were devoutly religious and believed that God was on their side...The Jews in Israel are devout believers, for the most part, and they also believe that G-d is on their side.....The confederates believed that a noble end - their own state - justified the violent means to achieve that goal....the Zionists in the Jewish state feel exactly the same way.....the Confederates felt an existential threat.....so do the Israelis.

The list of shared values between Zionism and the CSA is quite extensive...I'll stop at this point....why rub it in?

A sexagenarian trannie Orthodox Cherokee-Japanese quadraplegic with Downs syndrome walks into a gay piano bar...............

By: BenDover on 4/20/12 at 6:10

The claim is anecdotal. Surly the producers dismissed people other than the black guys in equally short interviews.

It's a fishing expedition. Hopefully the judge won't allow a subpoena of the producers' notes, etc. The whole, "I see racist people" current is strong in our society needs no assist from the bench.

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 6:10

My 7:07 post was in response to Rasputin's comment: ""The Confederacy would probably be the Israel of today back in its time."

I did not schlep the Israelis into the discussion...let the record be clear.

Amen on your Amen, Kosh....I do not care what Ozzie or Snookie do in their homes, in front of cameras....what have we degenerated into?

The people of the underground railroad, the abolitionist movement and the liberators of the slaves were deeply religious, noble and thought violence the right method to settle the issue too Loner.

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 6:27

Amen, Brother Ben...these lawyers are on a fishing trip....they loaded up their gear into their state-of-the-art Bassmaster Fishin' Boat and took off...they spotted a likely spot to cast their lines into....they used the two football players as live bait....when the big-mouthed bass encountered the bait, he sniffed it and swam away...he didn't bite....the hi-tech anglers got it all on their sonar and underwater cameras....those savvy fishermen are going to sue that bass's ass off.

....oh, and the "bait" fish? What about them? Back in the bucket, I suppose....something will bite on them....if they don't kill each other in the bucket.

By: parnell3rd on 4/20/12 at 6:30

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 6:31

So this makes the slavers just fine and dandy, Ben?

By: yogiman on 4/20/12 at 6:32

Loner,

It isn't what we degenerated to in the past, it's what we are degenerating to currently. The past is just that, the past. Currently is the beginning of the future. Are we being led by our government into communism for our future?

By: parnell3rd on 4/20/12 at 6:33

I mean really! Out elected leaders and the media is pushing the USA into another uncivil war. So you gun hating libs better arm up!

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 6:33

If there were not fish in the water, would they be baiting?

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 6:35

Another racist joins in. Hello parnell3dr!

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 6:35

By: BenDover on 4/20/12 at 7:15

The people of the underground railroad, the abolitionist movement and the liberators of the slaves were deeply religious, noble and thought violence the right method to settle the issue too Loner.

The folks who ran the underground railroad were not using violence to settle the issue.

As for the abolitionists, some did believe that their noble cause justified violent means.

As for the "liberators of the slaves", I'm not sure who you mean by that. If you meant the union's armies and the union's navy, some volunteered and some were conscripted. Most of the volunteers did so to preserve the union, not to free the slaves. The conscripts did it...or else.

By: parnell3rd on 4/20/12 at 6:36

Hey here is a fact since you brought up slavery. Did you know that after the United States made slavery a crime, that African's continued to sell African's into slavery? They continue to hate each other.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 6:40

So that makes you hate for blacks alright, parnell3rd?

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 6:42

The South opened fire first, Ben...a critical part of the equation.

I got my shootin' iron, Parnel...and a coonskin cap....just like you do...but can't we all just get a bong? Today is 4-20, man....light up & lighten up....Kum-Ba-Yah.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 6:43

What do you think the fighting between the Southern Slave Owners and the Northern freedom fighters was… a love fest? You are still making excuses here, Parnell3rd.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 6:46

You start the fighting Parnell and there will be a retribution this time that will be long lasting.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 6:54

With Rasputin’s blacks on a breeding rampage and Ben’s well they did it too campaign, along with Parnell wanting to shoot up the joint. I can see just how the south started lost the war the last time.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 6:55

shb and lost the war.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 6:58

Oh and another thing Parnell, if the blacks are out of control in their reproduction, the white slave owners had apart in it . They wanted breeding stock you know.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 7:00

Now all we need is the tongue from Antioch, to give us God’s view of this.

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 7:03

Parnell, let us not blame Africans for the institution of African Negro Slavery in the Old South...blaming the victim is no longer acceptable to reasonable people.

Read the Confederate Constitution - it mentions African negro slaves, African negro slavery etc. several times. The infamous document, which Southerners fought and died for, clearly states that the institution was to remain legal in the Confederacy...no expiration date on the institution of African Negro slavery...it also regulated the importation of fresh slaves from Africa.

There was no glory in the Great Secession and the war that ensued....the treasonous rebel armies and their leaders deserve no lasting glory, respect or honor.

The South never repented....Southern blacks endured a century of post-war terror at the hands of the KKK. Southern preachers looked the other way for a century...some still look away....they see no evil.

Sadly, trafficking in humans continues today..it's a time-honored profession....go into your local "Chef King Good Luck China Restaurant & Take-out" joint...those folks working their @sses off are probably indentured servants, or worse.

By: BenDover on 4/20/12 at 7:18

My point has been mischaracterized. The knees are a jerking again on the race issue as usual.

Loner tried to made a hyperbolic point (using his old Zionist apartheid canard) that Christians in the CSA were the cause of slavery and I pointed out that the institution of slavery was largely fought by Christians.

If you want to get into the whole re-write of Civil War history like ignoring the import tariffs that were highly punitive to the southern states in the lead-up secession, or that the Emancipation Proclamation was an instrument of war and did not apply to the Northern slave states, or Lincoln's admission that, if he could maintain the Union by preserving the institution of slavery, he would do so; well we can go there, but that was not the point I was making.

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 7:20

It's now 4:20 in Baghdad....hopefully, hookahs, with the bomb weed will be burning...not more bodies.

By: yogiman on 4/20/12 at 7:20

But, Loner, you can only say "are probably indentured servants, or worse". But you don't actually know, do you? So why suggest it and get another race riot in the neighborhood?

History is history. Our founder made several mistakes in forming our nation. The biggest error they made was accepting slavery because we have been paying for it ever since.

It's like our people of the future are going to be paying for our current government's mistakes in putting us deeper into debt. Why? For their own personal benefits.

By: slacker on 4/20/12 at 7:21

Loner, welcome to the firm. We just got in a complete stalk of extra-slippery bananas.
Your services will be needed at some big box stores our clients shop at.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/20/12 at 7:22

I bought a frill the other day and it was a flop by the time I got home. The store where I bought it said that they were not responsible and they would not give me my money back.

So I went to Slacker and Shady Associates and they got my .25 cents back. I’m still paying my attorneys fee, but I won!!!

By: Loner on 4/20/12 at 7:39

Slack...let me suggest the big box that sits where the Jim Reeves museum once stood...the Evergreens, I believe. There is a huge Karmic build-up there, we can tap into that motherlode...the slippery banana scam ...it's an old trick...but it just might work.

Shall we discuss this further...say...in some gay piano bar in Nashville? I'm confident that we could find an accomplice who is familiar with slick bananas there....we need the right "Fall Guy"....if we can find a thespian there, BINGO!
