Up for Debate: Election upsets

Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 11:50pm

What's your reaction to some of the local and state political upsets from Thursday? For example, in the District 9 school board race Amy Frogge beat Margaret Dolan despite the latter's massive campaign fundraising success. Sharon Gentry toppled long-standing board veteran Ed Kindall in the District 1 board race. Elissa Kim took down school board chair Gracie Porter in District 5. Also, in a big state race upset, Courtney Rogers, backed by the NRA, beat House Caucus Chair Debra Maggart. And Harold Love squeaked out the upset over incumbent Mary Pruitt.

The Head of the snake has been removed.
This was a victory for principles over politics and the 2nd Amendment !
Cheers to Sumner County and to Courtney Rogers !!!

Let this serve as a warning to the Establishment.

If another idiot says buying a AR-15 or AK-47, extended magazines, and 6,000 rounds of ammo over the Internet w/o a backround check is protected by The Second Amendment,...I'll scream.
Should be a light crowd on this board today. Many will be participating in the gay "Kiss-In" in protest of yesterday's supporters of straight marriage.
Whole planet is getting weird.

The school board elections were predictable. The people keep looking for easy answers top the quagmire called public education in Davidson County. The answers they are looking for are not at the school board. I would suggest that the answers lie with the 63% who participate in the free lunch free breakfast program and are considered students.

Martin Luther King and Hume Fogg excluded.

How is a winning candidate backed by the NRA considered an upset? Deep pockets = win.

And did anyone think that the "don't take my guns way" rednecks would lose...in Tennessee...lol

By: gdiafante on 8/3/12 at 5:12

From the story:

As of late June, the NRA-ILA spent more than $75,000 on ads both denouncing Maggart and supporting her opponent, including billboards that inaccurately compared her track record on gun rights with President Barack Obama — a total equal to more than half of Maggart’s war chest at the time. All told, the NRA has spent $200,000 in the race.

It's all about the money, folks. If you think these people work for us, there's a bridge I'd like to sell you in Brooklyn...

By: dargent7 on 8/3/12 at 5:31

The NRA or any lobbying group should be prohibited from spending more than $5,000. on any campaign. $200,000.? Think of all the school textbooks and computers that could buy. I think Obama and Mittens will raise over a billion for their election, ie., bribery scandal.
This country is sick.

The NRA is the “Establishment”.

By: gdiafante on 8/3/12 at 5:53

It means with all the economic issues we're dealing with, the most important should be guns in trunks. Didn't you get the memo, Nemo?

Don't you understand they're trying to take away our guns!!!!!!!!!

The NRA is misguided...everyone knows the trunk is where you keep the bodies, not the guns...

Looks like Yogi ventured out to the boro...

...don't take him to jail because he is old, stubborn and ignorant," Abdullah said.

Yep, sounds just like yogi...lol

By: govskeptic on 8/3/12 at 6:06

Mr. Love, although a perpetual candidate, will make a better State Representative
than Mrs. Pruitt for that particular district. It's rather amazing she has been able
to get re-elected so many times. Mrs. Rogers is a better candidate than the
press has given her credit for. Yes, the NRA endorsement provided an
advertising campaign that her lack of dollars would have provided in name
recognition, but the fact is she's a lot deeper candidate than just guns!

Ms. Kim should be an excellent addition to the School Board as well as
Mrs. Gentry.

By: yogiman on 8/3/12 at 6:17

You should wake up by 4pm, gdiafarte. Hang in there.

By: yogiman on 8/3/12 at 6:27

All positions having people elected to fill them are just that, they are elected to serve a set term. They aren't elected to a permanent position as so many would like for them to be.

I also think there should be restrictions on who can donate money to a candidate for a position and how my they can give, and that thought goes from the lowest graded elected positioned to the presidential position of this nation, but as the "wise" young man said; "deep pockets = win". It's obviously all in the money. Look whose in our White House today.

By: parnell3rd on 8/3/12 at 6:27

Politic's=Corruption Plain and simple.
Even on the school board.
Term limits needed in all area's of politic's.
Plus, get rid of all lobbyist.

By: yogiman on 8/3/12 at 6:28

P.S. I also hope you wake up before November 6, gdiafarte.

By: yogiman on 8/3/12 at 6:32

I agree, parnell3rd,

We apparently have more lobbyist than elected and hired officials combined. Some people call them sales agents.

Too many get jobs as lobbyists when they're defeated in an office campaign.

By: Loner on 8/3/12 at 6:34

Whatever.

By: Rocket99 on 8/3/12 at 6:34

Just hope they haven't replaced Maggart with someone worse. Tea Party usually means freaking idiot.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 6:37

Lets do go there gdia, life is too short to deal with a fool. You will hurt him if you ignore him.

Cops arrest a black man, search him twice, handcuff him then claim that the LEFT-handed handcuffed man had a gun which they didn't find and shot himself in the RIGHT temple and died.

Yep. And I've got some beachfront property in Arkansas that I'm selling.....

Welcome to the Fascist States of America

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 6:44

Good morning Loner, I can see the subject is an eye opener for you. lol Today is the first day of my sabbatical, Loner, but I am only taking two weeks off.

By: Loner on 8/3/12 at 6:51

Have fun, Captain. I gotta run some errands....later!

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 7:00

Kosh-

This could be murder or sloppy police work, for a hand cuffed man to kill himself. Either way the fringe right-wing will see this as a race card being pulled.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 7:02

Thanks Loner, I will.

By: yogiman on 8/3/12 at 7:09

Has any of you heard about the limit on punishment in schools lately, based on a child's race? What is the children's education coming to today?

In other news, how about team U.S.A.? They had a great day 6...Phelps, Douglas, Soni, the rowers...and how about the mens basketball team...I watched that game, it was sick...49 points in 10 minutes...shattered the all-time record with 150+ points, and 29 three-pointers...whoa.

USA...USA...USA

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 7:36

gdia, I’ve not watched any of the Olympics since opening night, but I have kept up with it and the USA is doing very good. I hope they continue to do so.

By: dargent7 on 8/3/12 at 7:38

Olympics:
Glad Lochte beat Phelps in a couple events.
No one needs more than19 medals in life.
China's badmiton team of two was real exciting to watch them throw the game.
The USA Gold judo female looks like I wouldn't want to piss her off.
The Dream Team playing who, Nigeria, was real fair.
Can't wait for the closing ceremonies.

By: parnell3rd on 8/3/12 at 7:47

yea d7 no one deserves anything under socialism. Why don't you run for office and go take Phelp's 19 medal away from him? While your at it why don't you go take away all the medal's that have been awarded to America's soldiers's?
You like our socialist president punish success.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 7:55

Garble rants wants attention. One more to ignore.

By: gdiafante on 8/3/12 at 7:59

Phelps earned every one of those medals. Lochte is overrated, IMO. Phelps looked bored in several races, otherwise, he'd have a couple more gold.

By: Beernazi on 8/3/12 at 8:02

Good mornign!

I see parnell is trying to channel Ayn Rand this morning.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 8:19

Good morning Blanket. The troll from Madison is a lonely troll. If we ignore it, there will one less post to read.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 8:23

gdai, Phelps is a champion and has earned all his metals. I also hope to see him win more.

By: yogiman on 8/3/12 at 8:35

If Locke is overrated, how did he win? Were his competitors bought out to slow down? Do you think Phelps would "just let him win" and take that $25,000 piece of gold away from him?

And what do you think of our government taxing those young people $8,900 for winning those medals?

Who were they representing, us, the USA, or just themselves? I'll pick us and the USA.

By: govskeptic on 8/3/12 at 8:36

It appears the Governor supported at least 3 of the 6 Republicans
incumbents that were defeated by primary challengers in State Representative
races. 4 democratic incumbents Reps were also defeated by challengers.

By: yogiman on 8/3/12 at 8:37

Should have pointed out the IRS is taxing those kids at the monetary value of each medal.

By: dargent7 on 8/3/12 at 8:47

"They" tax the Nobel Peace Prize and I'm sure The Pulitzer.
Maybe the Hollywood Oscar is taxed.
Those Olympians have millions in endorsements, even more now that some won.
You'll see Lochte on Wheaties next week.
I wonder if the government taxes the Purple Heart, Silver Star...
How about the Congressional Medal of Honor?
Put P-3rd on it. Sounds like he needs something to occupy his time.

By: gdiafante on 8/3/12 at 8:49

He's overrated because he was touted as having surpassed Phelps. If you actually comprehended what I wrote, I said that Phelps was disinterested. Once he turned it on, he won. Lochte didn't medal in one race and didn't win another gold except for on the relay.

Phelps body of work speaks for itself.

Porn star Jenna Jameson backs Mitt Romney

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57486127-503544/porn-star-jenna-jameson-backs-mitt-romney/

"I'm very looking forward to a Republican being back in office," Jameson said at a San Francisco strip club. "When you're rich, you want a Republican in office."

At least she's honest.... and we all know that Jameson has given out more "jobs" than Mitt ever has.....

By: yogiman on 8/3/12 at 9:42

How do you know how many "jobs" she's given out, brrrrk? Was you one of her "customers"?

By: gdiafante on 8/3/12 at 9:46

Oh yogi...you insufferable twit...lol

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 9:53

I wonder if she does pigs and hicks.

yogiman said

"And what do you think of our government taxing those young people $8,900 for winning those medals?"

Yogi, you have got to stop buying into the rights propaganda.

First of all, any of the winners are taxed only on the income that they receive from the award. The rate at which they are taxed is based on their overall income for the year... as a result, the tax rate could go from a minimum of 15% to a maximum of 35%. Using the maximum award of $25,000 (the gold) the minimum taxes a winner will pay is $3750 (which is probably what most will pay because in general olympic athletes don't have huge incomes) and the maximum will be $8750 (which is what someone like Phelps might pay due to the huge endorsements he may receive income from). That's the tax law................ and you're still a PG.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 9:54

There you go gdia. No attention will kill trolls.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/3/12 at 9:57

You are wasting your time with stupid brrrk. It only hears/sees with it wants to believe and nothing else get in.

By: yogiman on 8/3/12 at 10:20

I was only going y what I heard the "newscasters" say on TV, brrrrk. They spoke only of the medals in mentioning they were valued at $25,000 and the kids would be taxed for $8,900.

I guess I should "look " at them like I do the posters on this site: Consider the source and ignore it, eh?
