Up for Debate: Facebook goes public

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 1:00am

With Facebook shares on the verge of going public, what's your take on the company, its chief Mark Zuckerberg and all of the data amassed by the social network?

Good morning, Nashville.

Once again, I have no comment on this topic other than to say that I do not participate in the Facebook experience....I value my privacy too much and I do not trust the vendors to do the right thing.....others can join the stampede...the lone one is opting out.

By: Ummm... on 5/15/12 at 4:26

Ditto, Loner.

By: Ask01 on 5/15/12 at 4:27

I also do not participate in Facebook, although, I will admit to signing up once for some reason which escapes me at the moment. For whatever reason, the importance was so miniscule, I never went to my page and eventually terminated any connection.

A primary objection is the dependence of so many comment boards on Facebook, requiring an account to comment. For that reason, and the fact some folks who I have encountered on boards seem unstable, on the verge of becoming completely unhinged, and possibly dangerous, I see no reason to risk even the remotest chance personal information could be available to those who are, well, a little off center.

Plus, I have real friends and a real life, so the virtual world, aside from my brief forays here, holds little attraction.

Facebook, who needs it?

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 4:41

You nailed it, Ask01. I can see where Facebook is gobbling up the comment board business across the internet landscape...monopolizing the "free speech zones".

I will not sign-up with FB, just so I can comment on those online comment boards....the price is too high...as you say, it's an unnecessary risk.

You old dogs are missing out.
Facebook is exceptionally cool.
You can "talk" to people all over America.
Do you use cell phones? Or, do you think the "towers" are picking up your conversations?
Windows 7 operating system on your computer?
75% of all newspapers use Facebook when you write comments to LTE's or articles.
TCP is the only one I know of who doesn't. Yet.
I worked for Gannett who produces The Tennessean, USA Today, The New York Times, and The Detroit Press. All use Facebook when commenting.
Zuckerberg is like Bill Gates...another Harvard drop out who's a genius.
Get with the program, fellas.

By: dargent7 on 5/15/12 at 4:55

"....unstable, unhinged, dangerous, off center, suicidal...." Sounds like "yogi".

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 5:09

I post on the NYT and I am not a FB registrant, Darge.

If the NCP goes with FB, I will sign out for the last time...I love this site, but I will draw the line there and then....if the NCP wants to rid themselves of me, just go with FB...I'll pack up my E-carpetbag and mosey on.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 5:21

Sign up with Face Book and receive the "Mark" of the Beast.

Otherwise, you won't be able to participate in the "Mark"-et-place of ideas

You gotta toe the "Mark", if you want to post online, or be disqualified.

Mark Zuckerberg is a "genius" all right....the scary kind.

By: dargent7 on 5/15/12 at 5:26

Facebook is here to stay.
I simply do not understand your phobia with it.
It's harmless. It cannot sieze your bank account info. Your local home address.
It's a societal information/ communication system, who's time has come.
It's a lot more civilized than the shit I read here...and there you cannot say, "F*** You!
You're more comfortable with MS-DOS, or XP, than Windows 7?
You still use a slide rule for balancing your checkbook?
Facebook is here to stay.

By: dargent7 on 5/15/12 at 5:31

Definition of genius"....Bill Gates, Steven Jobs, Zuckerberg, even Yap-ster....communication....shared communication. On -Demand.
The Wall St. hedge fund operators, American banks, financial institution ass-holes are suckin this country dry, not high tech innovators.

By: dargent7 on 5/15/12 at 5:32

"Zuckerberg is a genius alright, the scarey kind..."
That's what they said about Galileo.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 5:34

I'll just "Mark" time, Darge....let the parade go forward without me.

By: gdiafante on 5/15/12 at 5:42

I briefly flirted with FB...found it boring and I wouldn't keep up with it. Seems though that since smart phones, everyone is doing FB now...in fact, if you want to talk to someone standing right in front of you, you need to update your FB first...

I'm with Loner...I can understand the technology and why it appeals to people, but I don't have the time nor interest to keep up with it consistently.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 5:45

Call me a loser, whatever, but the idea of a monopoly on managing the Comment Boards for all the major media scares me....that mega-corp. would limit the words, expressions, acronyms, euphemisms etc. to suit their agenda....the Newspeak Device that Orwell predicted will have come to pass....if one gets banned there, they would be banned everywhere.....apparently Big Brother's real name is Mark Zuckerberg.....but he's a nice guy, I'm sure....a brotherly sort of man...looking out for us....doing tough and sometimes unpopular things, for our own good, of course.

I will not patronize such a deal.

Once Mark corners the market on the Comment Boards, the Golden Age of the internet will have passed.....it was a brief age...things are moving at light speed these days.

By: Rasputin72 on 5/15/12 at 5:55

I find no reason whatsoever to invest my money or my time in FACEBOOK. I agree with LONER. If making comments on this board are channeled through FACEBOOK you can count me out. I

I have a number of investments in equity stocks. My broker asked me if I wanted to get in on the IPO for FACEBOOK? I replied that perhaps I would choose ENRON instead.

FACEBOOK may be wonderful for a group of people that I do not know. It does not appear to offer anything to me.

By: dargent7 on 5/15/12 at 5:56

Do you old timers use sun-dials to tell time?
Still own a RCA Victrola? Listen to music on a vinyl LP, 8-Track, or cassette?
Home phone has a cord?
Rabbit ears on your tv set (with aluminum foil)?
Unless you're wanted by the FBI, Facebook is it.

By: dargent7 on 5/15/12 at 6:01

"Enron, instead"....didn't Kenneth Lay bilk the entire Corp. out of it's employees pensions?
Biggest dumb-ass comment that can be made. The whole Co. went down the drain, and you want Enron shares?
You guys are a hoot.
If asked in 1945 if you wanted shares in Coca-Cola, I assume you'd say, "No, has cocaine in it".

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 6:01

Dargent7, my old friend....I would be reluctant to put Mark Zuckerberg up there with Galileo....and certainly, I don't think that my views are faith-based, as were Galileo's critic's.

Certainly, Mark is a genius at recognizing a need and filling it and in so doing enriching himself....as long as there is no harm done, that's great.

Nobody wanted to do "payroll"...so, Paychex stepped in...those creative entrepreneurs made billions. Fine...a win-win situation.

The major media wanted to farm out the comment board duties and Mark was right there to get that business.

I see some dangers in one large mega-corporation managing all the major media comment boards....I expressed them here.

By: gdiafante on 5/15/12 at 6:06

Darge, because someone chooses not to participate in FB doesn't make them technologically inept. If you actually were on FB, you'd realize it's populated with morons like yogi who post pictures that are best left to the attic and status updates of people doing nothing but somehow think we care.

Thanks, but no thanks.

By: Ummm... on 5/15/12 at 6:10

d7- my basic issue with Facebook is that it's TMI... for me and for anyone wanting info about me. Call me an "Old Timer" if you must, but I wouldn't even carry a cell phone if it wasn't necessary for my job. I'm just not that interested in keeping up with other people electronically, or in having them keep up with me that way. Furthermore, it's my belief that the "technology revolution" has actually led us all into a more insulated existence where we spend less and less time interacting with each other in person- which I find far more rewarding than "posting and tweeting." Add to that the fact that most people I know whose computers have been virus-infected blame FB for it, and it's a no-brainer to me.

By: yogiman on 5/15/12 at 6:11

Facebook may not be interested in your address itself, but it can have idiots like dumbass Captain Nemo to place your name, address and telephone number out to the world as he did mine.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 6:11

Let me be a bit more specific.

I am banned on the Jerusalem Post. A few days after I was banned there, I was banned on Bloomberg News, after only four posts on Bloomberg News...a one-day fling.

As you regulars know, I am not a big fan of the US-Israel "special relationship"; I believe that it is a lop-sided affair and is based upon half-truths, lies and wishful thinking. I was banned from the JPost for expressing my views on that topic.

Bloomberg banned me when I mentioned the Helen Thomas effect...Helen claimed that Zionists own and operate the US media, Wall Street and Congress....Helen was excoriated for stating the truth...I am banned for agreeing with her analysis.

Mr. Zuckerberg is not likely to tolerate posters like myself...if I don't sign-up, he cannot ban me....we'll spare each other the aggravation.

By: parnell3rd on 5/15/12 at 6:13

Who cares? I hate to admit it but I'm with loner on this one. Did that make you throw up?
I like how the Brazilian born, Havard educated, turned American Citizen, co-founder of facebook renounced his citizenship to keep from paying taxes on $3.8 billion!!!!
He must be buddies with Warren Buffet

By: gdiafante on 5/15/12 at 6:18

Oh parnell...are you naive or just a child? Is there one person alive who wouldn't try to get out of paying taxes if they could?

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 6:19

May 15, 2012....the left and the right find common ground.....not quite a Kum-Ba-Yah moment...but now we have hope & change....I feel warm and fuzzy all over....something shivering shooting up my leg.....better take my meds.

By: dargent7 on 5/15/12 at 6:22

Loner: I've got you beat. I'm banned from Detroit.
That takes some doing, but I'm an over-achiever..
All I'm saying is Facebook connects all the newspapers and people's communication.
I spoke about Junior Seau's death on USA Today and SD Union.
Could I have done it here, on TCP? No. Maybe 3 people would even know who he was.
All the reasons you guys are giving phobias goes back to the Beta-Max era.
This paper is the ONLY one who doesn't require Facebook.
So, enjoy it while you can. It will end.

By: BenDover on 5/15/12 at 6:25

I like facebook. It lets you passively keep up with what's going on with friends and family. I would never renounce my citizenship. .I'll ride this good old mare 'til she collapses and we replace her with something better.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 6:25

I just checked my crystal spheres of clairvoyance...my balls tell me that FB will go public, the major media giants will invest in it...they will then farm out their comment boards to the company that they are shareholders in....the only non-FB comment boards will be foreign-based or hosted by the domestic fringe elements.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 6:31

There was relative darkness before the advent of the internet, online newspaper comment boards and Face Book.....looks like the light is now flickering.....I was happy before the internet, I could kick the habit and survive.

The novelty of online posting is starting to fade for me....if Mark Zuckerberg becomes Emperor of the Comment Boards...I'll head back into the hinterlands, from whence I came.

By: dargent7 on 5/15/12 at 6:34

Ummm: You're right.
But we all use computers now, and there's Firewall, Melware, Norton's, Symtec, etc, that allows you to have "protection". If I get a "Facebook" message I don't recognize, I simply do not OPEN it.
eg., I have a German Shepard. If some ass-hole wants to break into my home, I don't have ADT, Brinks, even Metro Police on speed-dial.
She has a doggy door and is under strick orders to KILL anyone she doesn't know entering. She's scarier than my ex-mother in law.
I just don't understand the fears people have about their "personal stuff/ info".
No one really, actually, cares or gives a shit, about your individual life.

By: yogiman on 5/15/12 at 6:36

Ironic, isn't it, Loner, you have your consensus about Israel but I should not have equal consensus about educating you on Barack Obama. The only difference is your admiration of Obama and hate for Israel.

I only hate Obama for what he is attempting to do to our country. This next weekend, if you have the time, I suggest you watch a show on the situation. It's a long show, but you'll learn something you won't like to hear.

Go to www.social.patriotactionnetwork.com/video/video/show?id=200775%3AVideo%3A5785930&xgs_source=msg_share_video

I doubt it you'll like it but it might educate you a little. And believe me, Obama is just the latest one in the One World Government program. If you watch this show, you'll see him coming in after Bush, who took over from Clinton, who took over from Bush.

Remember when GHW Bush made the remark about One World Government but the people didn't realize what he was saying?

By: gdiafante on 5/15/12 at 6:45

No one really, actually, cares or gives a shit, about your individual life.

Then what's the point of FB?? You make no sense.

By: gdiafante on 5/15/12 at 6:46

It's way too early in the morning to be wearing the tin-fold hat, yogi. At least not on an empty stomach...

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 6:57

Homeland Insecurity is probably monitoring the site that Yogi put out there.....think I'll pass on that dish.

"One World Government"??

I have heard about this....Novus ordo seclorum...it's on our currency...the motto is the source of the "New world order" conspiracy theories ...the usual translation given is "New order of the ages"...a better translation, IMO, is a "New secular order"....even the Romans knew that church & state - sacred and secular - were two different animals....I think that the Founders realized that too.

But tin-foil-hat-wearing trolls have unearthed the "real reasons" for every action taken by "the government". Thanks to the internet, it's all out there...if you are looking for it, you can find it.

By: slacker on 5/15/12 at 6:58

Looks like the CP is contemplating requiring a Facebook membership to post. I hope they leave it as is, I enjoy checking in here, but I'm not a Facebook member, and don't intend to be. Reminds me of years ago, people standing in line at the grocery chains, to give personal information to obtain a card to buy groceries. They lined up like sheep, to get a card that allows them to spend their money in a grocery store. As if the store would have gone out of business, if people didn't comply. They probably got the idea from large businesses, and sports teams, that found out that people including their leaders, can be manipulated into doing anything. We're screwed.

By: yogiman on 5/15/12 at 7:00

Eat before you watch that show, gdiafante. Maybe you won't throw up. It's hard on your system throwing up on an empty stomach.

By: Rasputin72 on 5/15/12 at 7:00

DARGENT7 is certainly an anomaly in my world. There are times when his out of the blue comments are interesting. When it comes however to reading with comprehension one might say that when the Lord was passing out brains DARGENT7 thought he said trains and went to the depot.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 7:00

I agree, Gd, dry heaves in the AM is bad news.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 7:05

The Rasp goes for the personal attack on Darge....hey, Dargent7 is no dummy...he's got savvy, street smarts and experience...he expresses himself well, IMO....you back-off old Darge, Rasp, or I'll be forced to start working you over...don't make me do that....thanks.

By: gdiafante on 5/15/12 at 7:06

I'll pass, yogi. I usually don't watch nutjob propaganda films until the end of the month.

By: yogiman on 5/15/12 at 7:09

Can you explain why our country has had immigration laws on the books from the beginning but hasn't held those laws in order for many decades now? Can you explain why the latest batches of government has taken illegal aliens in and supported them with welfare (our money) as they have?

I'm a fool to you on your visions, and you're a fool to me on my visions. Makes us even, doesn't it?

So you keep up praising usurper Obama and I'll keep up trying to educate you on him.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 7:12

I hear dat, Slack....why steal an ID, when they are free for the asking?

Hackers and disgruntled employees have compromised the privacy of millions...SS #'s....PIN's....Acct. #'s....etc. have gone public...unauthorized data dumps, leaks etc. seem to happen way too often.

By: Loner on 5/15/12 at 7:14

Obama is not the Savior...but compared with Willard - the jack-knife barber of Cranbrook - Obama looks great.

By: slacker on 5/15/12 at 7:26

While we were out canoeing, Zuckerberg stole our idea... the schmuck.
-Winklevoss twins

By: gdiafante on 5/15/12 at 7:27

I think the consensus, and if I'm wrong please correct me, among the more Liberal posters here is that Obama hasn't delivered on quite a bit, but (and isn't this the rationale behind Conservatives support of Bush?) he's better than the alternative.

It all boils down to the GOP going off the rails. If they put forth a rational candidate, it was their election to lose. They haven't. Until they stop catering to the extreme right-wing of the party, they're not going to win.

By: slacker on 5/15/12 at 7:39

I don't see Mitt as an extreme right-winger. I think he has better business credentials, and more business savvy than Obama. And that might prove valuable in todays economic climate.
Maybe not.

By: BenDover on 5/15/12 at 7:45

Obama is floating on 20 points of padding provided to him by the unbiased media. In any reasonable world his approval would be in the high 30s and Mittens would be in the middle 50s.

By: gdiafante on 5/15/12 at 7:46

I didn't think he was at first, slacker, but he's attempting to portray himself as the most Conservative Conservative throughout the land. He hasn't been able to stand up to anyone on the Right, which explains why his beliefs change from day to day.

I don't think that what this country needs is a Wall Street knuckle-head. That's how we got here.

By: BenDover on 5/15/12 at 7:49

I won't log into this site with facebook. I try to keep all my alter-egos separated.

By: BenDover on 5/15/12 at 7:51

Blowing the first 2 years of his administration on an entitlement we can't afford could help explain the persistent cough, gd. Also turning the NLRB loose on businesses might have had a dampening effect. Then the whole war on fossil fuel might be a factor. Just my opinion though.
