Up for Debate: Hall of Fame class strikes out

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 10:33pm

This year's class of Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame candidates — including Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, who are associated with using performance enhancing drugs — got snubbed by writers voting on who makes it into Cooperstown. Do you think such players should ever be considered for the honor, or will they just be voted in later, with this year's vote turning out to be just a temporary setback?

They have the right to be voted on just like Barack Hussein Obama.

If the culture of America continues to change they will be voted into the Hall along with Good Jelly Jones and Sack Pants Smith.

LONER is gonna love this topic. He loves peacenik issues and I love the class warfare issues. Today the CP threw out a "knuckleball".

Responses should shake this issue down to namecalling before 9 AM

With the current zeitgeist, I doubt they have the slightest chance of being included in any hall for the famous or accomplished.

However, as time passes, and the mood of the country changes, there is the possibility future generations will be more forgiving and less judgemental. There is even, however remote, the possibility attitudes will change, and people will marvel at the archaic mania surrounding the use of what could eventually become an accepted part of the sports training program.

Only time will tell. It's possible, I suppose, they and others could eventually be recognized with an asterisk to denote a conditional induction.

A major difference of opinion, Rasputin72.

By law, you don't have to be an American citizen to play in the game called baseball; but you are legally required to be a natural born citizen of the USA to be President of the USA... which Barack Hussein Obama isn't.

Common sense says If he was, he would have willingly proved it when he was first questioned and saved himself a "pocket full of money". If he's successful in making it to his dictatorship goal, it won't matter if he is or isn't... will it?

By: treehugger7 on 1/10/13 at 7:34

Instead of an *, why not just put "cheater" after their names. I have been a baseball fan since I learned to walk. The powers that be got rid of Pete Rose for lesser infractions. Bonds, Sosa and Clemons did much worse and should not be in the Hall of Fame.

By: yogiman on 1/10/13 at 8:28

Not to change the subject; but isn't it odd your man Barry is making an effort to override our 2nd amendment gun rights using the CT school shooting as his reason yet an incident happened at Sullivan Central High in Blountville TN on August 30, 2010 of which nothing was ever mentioned on national news. Why, because only the killer was killed by the young woman working in the school as the resource officer before he could murder anyone?

The young woman that stopped him should have been recognized by our State legislature, but she wasn't and according to what I've read, she put her life on the line for the principle of that school by stepping in front of him before "killer" could make a shot.

Credit where credit is due and this young woman deserves credit.

I see from yesterday that the willfully ignorant are still in denial about Obama blowing all the TARP repayments and using that one time crisis as a new baseline for federal spending. He's propped up all the malfeasance with the yet-to-be-earned wages of our grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The level of denial is worse than that of a battered spouse in a Lifetime movie.

So... before your knee jerks so hard to knock your head back, will your screaming 'Bush!!" and "War!!" make it any better for the country to continue turn a blind eye to what is going on now?

Since many players chose to violate the rules and use PED's, while many players chose to follow the rules and not use PED's, the accomplishments were tainted. In the 'dead ball period' and the higher mound period, the playing field was level, so no one had an advantage over their competetors.

Many of these guys would have made the HOF without the use of PED's, but they cherished a bigger paycheck and fame at the time over integrity and future fame as a Hall of Famer. For that, they need to not get recognized for being outstanding players for a period of time. I would say a five period is enough time to let these guys think about what they did to the game, maybe adopt an air of contrition and honor for the game that they tainted.

There are many parties who are culpable to what happened, but it still doesn't change the fact that these players cheated the rules and the game. You can certainly argue that if they weren't caught, they weren't cheating, but that is where integrity comes in. You can also argue that players in the past weren't totally clean either, but you can't make a right out of this argument. What has already happened can't become precident for now when the precident was wrong.

With all of the drugs being used in today’s sports, I do not enjoy these activities as I once did. I can’t be sure if it is the sportsman or just synthetic-sportsman. So why should these people get any awards.

By: BenDover on 1/10/13 at 9:05

This topic is certainly not as interesting as the obamanominations from yesterday.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/13 at 9:07

In an attempt to avoid being call on the spot, Rasputin tries to deflect the issue of being the one who starts the name calling. However it is after 9AM.

By: bfra on 1/10/13 at 9:09

Ben - You can quit crowing! Your tinhat theory is so old & worn out but you just keep TARP TARP TARPING IT. Do you have it on tape?

By: yogiman on 1/10/13 at 9:12

Every move Obama makes should be interesting until he is ousted from office, BenDover.

Keep your eye on the ball until it reaches the catcher's mitt.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/13 at 9:16

PKVol points too many of the issues for not voting for these people; one they have tainted the sport. They could have made it on their own, but chose to cheat. This is much like what our society has adopted in the pursuit of great riches. Cheat at any cost.

Take it away Rasputin.

The rejected players will no doubt tune in to Lance Armstrong's appearance on ''Oprah''.. to see how his mea culpa goes down.
This could be the next big reality tv show.. with ex-jocks asking for forgiveness.
The tv audience would decide winners by text voting.
I'm betting Pete Rose would get forgiveness, with a Jimmy Swaggart style plea. Americans love to forgive.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/13 at 9:38

What an interesting idea you have slacker.

I was asked the other day if there was anyway this country could be diverted from the abyss of riots, mayhem and insurrection/

I said from an academic point of view it would be quite easy. Withdraw voting privileges from any person who does not pay any federal income tax. The productive people would solve every fiscal and social problem within eight years.

The sports world is just a microcosm of America. You cheat, steal, lie until you get caught, then you ask forgiveness. Much like the political and busyness worlds does.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/13 at 11:03

I was asked the other day how could America be run better than it has ever been. I said do, it my way. I am perfect.

By: Loner on 1/10/13 at 12:13

Good morning, Nashville.

I do not follow MLB, so this topic is of little interest to me....the Hall of Fame thing is purely subjective....it's a kind of popularity contest. Bottom line: You gotta play by the rules....or be prepared for the consequences of being an outlaw and cheat.

I have no pity for the scofflaw jocks who were slighted and are now miffed....they were well-paid and they got more than their 5 minutes of fame and glory.....to me, this is much ado about damn little.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/13 at 12:18

Hello Loner.

By: Loner on 1/10/13 at 12:26

Slept in late this morning....had a great time in Albany yesterday. Anti-fracking rally and protest march.

The venerable Pete Seeger showed up and we all sang, "This Land Is Your land"....two thousand anti-frackers versus about 100 pro-frackers....my signage read: IS CUOMO FRACKING LOCO? It was a hit. I got on the NBC affiliate in Albany...they stuck a mic in my hand and put a TV camera in my face....they asked me if I had a message for the Governor; so I told the Governor that we wanted more grapes, not more gas....we want to uncork New York, not frack up the aquifer.

It's good to be home this morning, Albany is 230 miles East of here but in some ways, it is thousands of miles from here....multinational energy conglomerates are lusting after our natural gas....and our governor, the doted upon son of Mario Cuomo, is acting like a man on the take...and an eye on the White House in 2016....keep an eye on this high-rolling son-of-a-bitch....he's dirty.....and he's got a mean streak....he is a vendetta type.

By: Loner on 1/10/13 at 12:27

Hello, Captain Nemo.

By: yogiman on 1/10/13 at 1:04

Well golleee, bfra, are you making your stupid comments in Obama's favor to distract us to your stupidity on his eligibility issue?

Welcome to the club, you're not alone. And not just on this site.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/13 at 1:09

Pete Seeger was one of my wife's favorite, Loner.

By: Loner on 1/10/13 at 1:11

Yeah, it's breaking news, another shooting in a US school:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/10/us-usa-shooting-california-idUSBRE90910H20130110

Armed guards in every public school is coming....what has this nation devolved into?

There's an old saying in theater, if there is a gun introduced in Act 1, it must be fired by Act 4. Some refer to this trope as, "Chekhov's gun", a literary device concerning foreshadowing.

Maybe, this is also the case with America, the well-armed....we have introduced nearly 300 million firearms onto the civilian stage....before this slide into mass hysteria is over, they may all be fired. And the American Experiment will be the victim....this is a tragedy, not a comedy.

Nobody seems to have connected the dots, but the 2nd amendment and the Great Secession and the resulting war between the states was a natural progression. The Southerners picked up their weapons and rebelled against the federal government in Washington...they opted for the 2nd amendment solution to their grievances....they mobilized their "well-regulated militia" and started shooting.

The 2nd amendment should have been abolished when the Southern states seceded from the union....but nobody at the time seems to have recognized the cause and effect relationship between these elements.

How many more must die, before we see the light?

By: Loner on 1/10/13 at 1:20

Pete Seeger is looking good, for a man his age....moving under his own power....still sharp....still gracious....still humble....still bitchin'....Pete is an American Hero.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/13 at 1:41

Armed guards in schools and movie houses. The right wing fringe has made society mad. Keep the guns, but leave us crazies alone.

By: yogiman on 1/10/13 at 1:58

I wonder why nothing was heard about the man going into the school in Blountville in 2010. He was armed with two guns and the only thing that stopped him was a young woman working there as the school resource officer.

I guess it isn't interesting if they don't fire a shot before being shot.

By: dargent7 on 1/10/13 at 2:28

Excellent question...Barry Bonds head is the size of a cantelope when 10 years ago it was the size of an orange.
Clemens was a pitcher, right? At 260#'s? Pitchers are the skinniest players of the lot.
These guys should take Lance Armstrong's lead and deny, deny, deny, until you finally fess up and say, "I'm GUILTY FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, ALREADY!"

By: dargent7 on 1/10/13 at 2:37

re: My Detroit Tigers. Denny McClain won the Cy Young and won 31 games. The Tigers won the World Series in 1968 and again in 1984 (I think). Not with him.
McClain has been in prison half his life since baseball.
Pete Rose bet as manager against his own team to lose.
Sports are repleat with scum-bags who have no moral character....just run, kick, field, catch some type of ball.
All the testing in the lab cannot detect a scum-bag degenerate at heart.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/13 at 3:33

I had hoped that Armstrong had been innocent. But now if he is going to admit to doping, then he and any others should be made examples to show if you are going to do the crime, then you are going to pay.

It is people that cheat and Barry Bonds, will kill the professional sports.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/13 at 3:37

People that receive a hero’s rewards that do not deserve such rewards should pay for their deceit.

A chameleon can change it's color but it's still a chameleon.
Romney lost the 2012 election because he wasn't a "man for the people", just the rich.
He was caught on tape talking about the throw-away society, the "47%", who don't pay taxes.
He learned a very hard lesson those very people VOTE.
If Obama had said "47% of whites are crackers", he wouldn't be sitting in the W.H.
And the "productive people" Sid referrs to are the ones' who get a 12% effective tax rate, capital gains, divedends, write-offs, off-shore accounts, tax havens and shelters, and start and support foreign wars based on "faulty Intel", known in the 'hood as bullshit.
Name ONE person you know getting Foodstamps who has capital gains and a bank account in Switzerland or the Cayman Islands.

By: Rasputin72 on 1/10/13 at 5:24

I am certain that people like the Simple Six have little regard for the productive class.

Since first grade the productive class has rub roughshod over the meager genetics the Simple Six were endowed with. Ther surely would not like to lose their ability to vote for free stuff and more entitlements.
